    Description
    Duties


    • Furnishes historical information, pertaining to command activities, in response to official and unofficial inquiries from outside sources.
    • Uses a wide variety of research methods such as oral interviews of persons having knowledge of the subject matter.
    • Conducts research through library collections, archival records and depositories, and official documents and writings by persons having firsthand knowledge of the events covered to conduct/complete historical research endeavors.
    • Investigates and ensures the accuracy and reliability of evidence to determine its relative value to the subject-matter for which a history is to be prepared.
    • Considers significant agency organizational changes, operations, problems, decisions, relationships to and impact on other agencies, accomplishments and failures.
    • Performs a wide variety of miscellaneous programmatic functions in support of the SDDC military history program.
    • Establishes and maintains a historical documentation file that pertains to command operations.
    • Develops and maintains the HQSDDC organizational history file.
    • Screens all activities of the command to discern those of significant importance for incorporation in the Command's Annual Historical Review and other historical reports.
    • Provides historical reference services to the commander, staff principals, and planning/operating officials requiring historical research on current operations or problems

    • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
    • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
    • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 15% of the time.
    • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315

    Basic Requirements for a GS , Historian position: Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history
    OR Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education
    In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

    Specialized Experience:
    One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Executing and/or maintaining a command history program; 2) Serving as an authoritative advisor to command and staff by providing historical information and documentation to assist in decision making and policy of the research and development mission; and 3) Overseeing the development, display and maintenance of historical data pertinent to the mission, and preparing historical data for presentations, written reports and briefings
    This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12)
    You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:


    • Communications
    • History and Archaeology
    • Information Management Time in

    Grade Requirement:
    Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12)

    FOREIGN EDUCATION:

    If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.
