Supplier Note: When we look at candidates, we are looking skills in three areas: server hardware, automation, and the UNIX / Linux operating system. Realistically, we expect that no one will come in strong with all three skills. So we look for someone to come in with two of the three, and be very strong in at least one. We think that way, the person can contribute to the team on day 1, and it would make it worthwhile for us to spend the energy / effort in training up the person in the other two skills.

If we were hiring for a consulting only position, our criteria may have been different. Since this is temp to perm, we want to feel comfortable with investing our time in developing the candidate, as if we were hiring an FTE. We think this is not only what makes sense for us, but also it's what the candidate deserves, when investing into a role that may become full time.

Experience with hardware testing and with Linux are the two key requirements. If the candidates are light on automation and/or virtualization, we can work with that provided that a) they have demonstrated desire and some level of exposure to automation and/or virtualization, and b) they are good with hardware testing and Linux.

Hardware testing means you have run some performance tests against the hardware, you understand how the hardware works, and you can explain it. There are some specific technologies that are used in all server hardware, which we talk about during the interview.

Desire to be hands on in an engineering role.

We are willing to talk to candidates from smaller firms / not FSI, provided they can demonstrate a security mindset. Biggest challenge that previous candidates from startups have had is adapting to the risk / controls environment at JPMC.

Common reasons for rejecting candidates:

We get a lot of Linux system administrators. This is not a Linux system administration job. They may be very good at Linux, but the candidates don't show any hardware testing experience. Using hardware is not the same as testing it.

Some people came in with hardware testing experience (which was great), but their experience was mainly on running existing scripts; they could not demonstrate knowledge of how to modify scripts or create new ones.

Some candidates expressed enthusiasm for learning hardware testing. We appreciate that, but that is not enough – they need to have demonstrated some experience with hardware testing.

As a Lead Infrastructure Engineer at JPMorgan Chase within the Enterprise Technology and Infrastructure Platforms division, you will demonstrate comprehensive knowledge across various technical disciplines, including software, applications, and technical processes. Your expertise in a specific domain within infrastructure engineering will be crucial in promoting programs or initiatives that encompass multiple technologies and applications.

JPMC is seeking a Hardware Engineer to join our ICP Wholesale (ICPW) team. The ICPW team manages x86 server environment on all our data centers, globally. This is a great opportunity for an engineer who is passionate in working hands on with the latest data center server technology, including performance, failure and resiliency testing, researching new features around data center cooling, power management and core densification, large scale deployment and lifecycle management in Production through automation, and analyzing historical trend data.

Responsibilities:

•Working with end users to define requirements and associated test cases for validation.

•Ensuring a tight loop between hardware qualification and user requirements

•Publishing insights from performance & power testing.

•Writing tests, creating bare metal servers and configuring OSs, leveraging vendor tools

•Building and maintaining extensive lab automation using technologies such as Ansible and Terraform.

•Conducting performance testing using frameworks like Phoronix.

•Performing paper analysis/comparisons of features and functionality, including market comparisons to other on prem and cloud providers

Minimum Qualifications:

•BS or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

•7+ years of experience in hands-on engineering to build systems/products for datacenter environments, large scale gaming environments, or similar

•7+ years of experience with proven troubleshooting skills in the server hardware space

•Strong experience with PCIe, Networking, Flash, Memory, CPU, GPU, DRAM (DDR4/5 or HBM).

Preferred Qualifications:

•Experience with scripting in Linux (Bash, CLI, ILO, RedFish, SSACLI, STOCLI, etc).

•Working knowledge of RHEL/CentOS and Windows.

•Experience with BIOS, firmware, and patch validation.

•Experience with performance testing of servers using a server virtualization stack, such as VMware ESXi, Hyper-V, or KVM

•Administrative knowledge of JIRA, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.
