    The Role:


    We are looking for an experienced Consultant to join our medical team at Mildmay Oaks Hospital to provide input into our inpatient services.


    The successful candidate will be committed to a career in the Psychiatry of Intellectual Disabilities and will work as part of an MDT comprising psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and nurses to deliver holistic and person-centred care in line with the ethos of the Priory Healthcare Group.

    The Consultant will be a member of an experienced multidisciplinary team. This post will be partly supported by a Specialty Doctor. This is not an acute site and admissions are planned and triaged by the MDT. The service is currently covered by a locum, who has found the experience very positive and friendly.

    The medical team comprises of three consultants, including a medical director, two specialty doctors and a rotating resident doctor. There is access to medical secretarial support and admin support from a wider administrative team. Oncalls are shared between two other Priory sites and are fairly low intensity. Currently the oncall is schedules roughly as 1 in 5 oncalls.

    The priory offers a mentorship for new Consultants and opportunity for ongoing professional development. There is scope for developing the academic programme and clinical services along with the senior management team. There is an active peer group for supporting professional development, who provide excellent support.

    Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register.

    Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview.

    Experience of working with individuals with learning disability and developmental disorders is essential. Experience of forensic psychiatry is desirable.

    There is scope for further service development moving forwards and opportunities to gain experience in providing specialist psychiatric care for individuals with developmental disorders and personality disorders.

    Responsibilities of the post-holder:

    The post holder is expected to:


    Take clinical responsibility for patients, including multidisciplinary ward rounds, risk reviews, strategic reviews and the development of a therapeutic milieu.

    Fulfil the role of Responsible Clinician to patients detained under the Mental Health Act

    Supervise the process of referral and admission including contributing to preadmission assessments of young people with other team members.

    Offer a psychiatric perspective to the multidisciplinary team in relation to the assessment, formulation and treatment of young people.


    Contribute to management meetings, service development and clinical governance meetings for the services provided at the hospital, and contributing to the development of service strategy.


    Contribute to in-house training programmes within the services and offering supervision to other members of the multi-disciplinary team, particularly junior medical staff.

    Maintain CPD and re-validation requirements, as determined by the Royal College of Psychiatrists or other relevant statutory bodies.
