The Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University seeks a collaborative, dynamic, and accomplished academic physician leader to serve as its next Dean. Florida Atlantic University (Florida Atlantic) is a multicultural public research university with ten colleges, 30,000 students, and six campuses spanning over 100 miles of coastline. The University has seen remarkable growth in its programs and reputation in just the last few years, including doubling research expenditures, enrolling an all-time high number of National Merit Scholars, setting new records for private gifts to the FAU Foundation, increasing graduation and academic progress rates, and raising the profile of Florida Atlantic's athletics program. Florida Atlantic is ranked among the nation's top public schools by U.S. News & World Report, landing at No. 112 in 2024, moving up from No. 131 in 2023; this is the largest rise out of all public universities in the state of Florida for the second year in a row.

Created to address the healthcare needs of the state, the Schmidt College of Medicine is a community-based medical school that admitted its first class of students in 2011. The College includes 170 faculty (84 full and 86 part-time), 1,300 affiliate faculty members, 273 medical students, 177 residents and fellows, as well as 100 graduate students in biomedical science, and 20 post-baccalaureate students. In addition, 27% of medical students and 47% of graduate students represent a racial or ethnic group traditionally underrepresented in medicine.

Five local hospitals from top healthcare systems in the region, namely Baptist Health and Tenet Health, serve as key partners for undergraduate medical education (UME) and form the Graduate Medical Education (GME) Consortium that offers residency and fellowship programs. The college also has a faculty-practice plan, FAU Medicine, and recently partnered with Broward Health to establish a faculty-practice plan and integrated academic medicine model within a public, safety-net health system. Florida Atlantic is also affiliated with Memorial Healthcare System, Cleveland Clinic Florida, and the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience, offering outstanding research and educational opportunities for faculty and students. Research and development activities in the College drive a university-wide effort to build key pillars of research strengths consistent with the University Strategic Plan.

The meteoric rise of the College's national standings has been due to the development and successful implementation of innovative undergraduate and graduate medical education programs. Additionally, the College has seen a steady increase in federally supported extramural funding and now accounts for the majority of Florida Atlantic's NIH-sponsored research.

The College annually provides approximately 350 students with a variety of educational offerings, including an MD program, an MD/PhD program, MS and PhD degree programs in Biomedical Sciences, and graduate certificates. The College's student population reflects the great diversity of the University at large and surrounding community, with approximately one-third of students coming from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in medicine and biomedical science. Florida Atlantic is the No. 1 public university in Florida for campus ethnic diversity, according to U.S. News & World Report, making it the most racially, culturally, and ethnically diverse university in the state.

Reporting to the Provost, the new Dean will be tasked with working with the college community to set the vision for the College of Medicine's next stage of evolution. This will include building upon successful UME and GME programs, clinical, translational, basic science, and population health research program building, furthering clinical partnerships and practice opportunities, and actively engaging the community.

Candidates must hold an MD degree with a record of significant administrative accomplishments in an academic medical setting. The successful candidate will have a national reputation for clinical, population health, and/or biomedical scholarly work, superior communication, and relationship-building skills, and a clear understanding of how to lead a community-based medical school successfully. Candidates should also have experience engaging the school community in managing change, retention, and integrating new clinical partnerships. A strong fiscal acumen, the capacity to engage donors, and the ability to recruit top-quality faculty and staff are requisites, as are a strong sense of integrity, emotional intelligence, and a history of building trust.
