    JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State Altoona is excited to welcome applications for the 10-month position of Counselor with a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) focus.

Reporting to the Co-Director of the Health and Wellness Center, an integrated center providing healthcare, counseling and psychological services (CAPS), this Counselor provides mental health and support services to students with a primary focus on students of difference and serves as the primary CAPS liaison to the Belonging Center.

Some office hours will be held within the Belonging Center, providing drop-in hours, coordination for Basic Needs Requests, Care and Advocacy (Care Team) referrals, and outreach to the campus community on topics related to mental health from a DEIB perspective.

This is an 83.3% full-time equivalency (FTE) position. Months off are June and July. Full Penn State benefits included. Work hours are primarily Monday through Friday, with 2 to 4 evenings per month required. May be asked to participate in outreach and campus crisis/emergency response efforts, and these may require evenings and weekends.

The successful candidate will be trained in trauma-informed care, and have high cultural competency in clinical, outreach, and training experience serving diverse populations, including BIPOC, LGBTQ, International, and neurodiverse students.

    Position Responsibilities:

    • Provide trauma-informed and multiculturally competent counseling services to students which include individual intake/assessment, diagnosis, short-term individual/group counseling, single-session therapy/consultation (CAPS Chat), case management, crisis intervention, and necessary referrals as appropriate; primarily focused on supporting students of difference.
    • Create individualized treatment goals for short-term counseling students.

    • Provide weekly drop-in hours in the Belonging Center for walk-in appointments (CAPS Chat) and case management services for Care and Advocacy (CARE Team) and Basic Needs Requests.
    • Case management of CARE and Basic Needs Referrals entails the coordination and delegation of referrals to appropriate offices and resources, communication with students, coordination and consultation with Care and Advocacy liaisons at University Park, and follow-up with students to ensure needs are appropriately resolved to the degree possible. This is a supportive rather than therapeutic role. CARE and Basic Needs information is documented using the Maxient system, which is separate from counseling electronic medical records.
    • Maintain visible presence through participation in formal and informal outreach and campus events. This may include resource fairs, student-led and student-focused programs, developing and maintaining partnerships with students from underrepresented groups, DEIB-related student organizations and campus and community organizations.
    • Work as part of a collaborative team as member of an integrated health and wellness center. Participate in Health and Wellness Center staff meetings, multidisciplinary team meetings, case consultations, supervision and Commonwealth Campus Mental Health Network meetings and trainings.
