Job Summary


The Counseling Faculty position begins in August, 2026.

The Core Functions of this position include providing counseling services (at two Chandler Gilbert locations, the Pecos and Williams campuses), instruction within our degree programs, and may include other reassigned roles. The successful candidate will provide non-clinical counseling to assist our students in their personal, career, and academic success. They will provide instruction to our diverse student body through our Associate in Arts, Emphasis in Counseling and Applied Psychological Science, and the First-Year Experience (FYE) program. In addition to these Core Functions, faculty are required to participate in Professional Development and Service to the college. Other aspects of the job include, but are not limited to, crisis intervention, facilitating outreach, suicide prevention training, and representation on college and district committees.

Essential Functions


Teaches FYE/CAP/CPD/BHS courses (primarily first year experience and counseling courses) and conducts workshops and class/group presentations; prepares and delivers course-related materials to satisfy course competencies, creates syllabi and lesson plans, and offers instructional support/office hours.

Develops instructional materials and curriculum; develops written syllabi/course outlines and course materials; assesses and evaluates knowledge of subject matter taught. Prepares and grades examinations and other learning activities; participates in division and college assessment and program review processes; uses assessment and evaluation results to improve instruction and student learning.

Provides non-clinical counseling services via scheduled appointments as well as walk-in coverage to meet with students seeking individual attention related to personal, academic, and career concerns; provides support in managing emergencies, ranging from individual crisis intervention to campus-level incidents; provides professional consultation to faculty, staff, and administrators related to student concerns and referrals; responds via face-to-face, phone or email, and maintains private records and notes

Participates in a variety of campus and district-level committees, program initiatives, special projects, curriculum development, and faculty/staff training. Maintains a collaborative team approach within the counseling discipline and with other campus team assignments. Takes responsibility and leadership of programs as assigned/requested. Shares in the administrative supervision and ongoing development of the Counseling Service/Instructional programs. Engages in active faculty development programming, including mandatory new faculty orientation and evaluation activities, as well as opportunities for professional skill development in instructional, counseling, and/or consultation roles. Develops and cultivates relationships with high school and university institutions to develop and promote transfer pathways for students.

In addition to pursuing excellence in teaching, direct support service, and institutional leadership opportunities, all residential MCCCD faculty are expected to engage in ongoing professional development. Probationary faculty are expected to participate in structured programs designed to support their growth in teaching and learning as reflective scholars and practitioners. Contributes to the mission of the college; demonstrates intercultural competence and humility in interactions with students, staff, and the community; maintains a team approach in collaborating with faculty, staff, and students.

All faculty have access to and are expected to participate in a variety of training and workshops through our on-campus Center for Teaching, Learning & Assessment (CTLA), Maricopa Center for Learning & Innovation (MCLI), and discipline-specific opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications


A. A master's degree or higher with an emphasis in counseling, from a regionally accredited college or university, and have completed at least twenty-four (24) semester / thirty-six (36) quarter hours or equivalent of graduate work, including the following:

1. Counseling Theories and Techniques (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)

2. Personality Theories or Human Development (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)

3. Testing Theories and Applications (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)

4. Group Counseling Theories and Techniques (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)

5. Career Counseling Theories and Resources (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)

6. Individual Assessment (minimum 3 semester credit hrs/5 quarter credit hrs)

7. Practicum, supervised Practice, or Internship in Counseling

B. Must have completed either a Practicum, Supervised Practice, or an Internship in counseling. A counselor may be hired if he/she has completed coursework in at least five (5) of the first six (6) above areas and has the required twenty-four (24) semester or 36 quarter hours of graduate work. If the counselor is deficient in any of the areas 1 through 6, the deficiency shall be removed within one year of the date of hire. Area seven (7) must be completed before the date of hire.

Desired Qualifications


  1. Experience teaching a variety of counseling courses using active learning techniques (Careers, First-Year Experience, Counseling, Personal Development, Multiculturalism, etc.), with community college experience preferred.
  2. Experience working in a counseling setting, providing multi-culturally competent individual and group academic, personal, career, and crisis counseling/intervention, with community college experience preferred.
  3. Experience assessing and triaging mental health crises, coordinating appropriate community referrals, and serving on and or collaborating with a Behavioral Intervention Team, with community college experience preferred.
  4. Experience using assessment strategies to measure student-learning outcomes, enhance student learning, and improve instruction. Experience using Canvas as a learning management system in a community college setting is preferred.
  5. Experience providing professional consultation with faculty, staff, and administrators regarding concerns about student welfare/safety, behavioral issues, developmental needs, and making campus referrals. Community college experience preferred.
  6. Experience providing career assessment, interpretation, and intervention. Community college experience preferred.
  7. Experience in administrative or leadership roles within a counseling service office, such as coordination of campus counseling services, outreach programs, or training/supervision. Community College Experience preferred.

  8. One year of relevant full-time MCCCD experience during the previous two years.

** Experience within other community college systems or higher education institutions is valued and may be considered in addition to MCCCD experience. External candidates are encouraged to apply.

Special Working Conditions


Possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D driver's license is required; must meet minimum standards regarding driving:

Assignment may extend past the normal academic semesters.

Work Schedule Varies

May require lifting objects weighing up to 25lbs.

Will be required to travel to the Pecos Campus for interviewing, selection, and employee orientation at the applicant's own expense.

Will be required to initially teach in person (Years 1 through 3), with the possibility of teaching hybrid and online courses after Year 3 of the Probationary Faculty timeline.

May be required to sit for a prolonged period of time viewing a computer monitor.

Will be required to work on campus (in-person), with the possibility of remote work in accordance with Maricopa policy.

May be required to instruct at multiple sites and/or teach days and/or evenings.

Will be required to work in an area of light noise.

May be required to travel to other locations within the Maricopa Community College District.
