    Mental Health Counselor - Lincoln, United States - Southeast Community College

    Under the general direction and supervision of the Director of the Counseling Assistance Program for Students (CAPS), the Part-Time CAPS Counselor is responsible for maintaining a schedule of individual and group therapy sessions that aim to promote student academic success, psychological resiliency and student retention.

    The counselor will provide direct counseling services on multiple SCC locations, including Milford and Beatrice (and Learning Centers if needed) as well as assist in efforts for college wide mental health awareness teams, peer support groups, student and employee trainings and developmental CAPS program responsibilities.

    This is a part-time regular position with normal work hours scheduled by the College generally between 8:00a.m. and 10:00p.m. Monday through Friday, requiring ability to respond to after hour concerns as needed.

    Essential Functions


    • Provide direct counseling services to SCC students
    • Provide supervision to CAPS Interns as needed
    • Provide training, education and guidance to faculty/staff in professional coaching, student wellbeing and active listening techniques
    • Interpret and use psychological reports and psychometric information related to cognitive or mental health concerns that may affect student success and suggest services or strategies to cope with or overcome such concerns or impediments
    • Implement and assure follow up with students especially when there is a threat of harm to self or others
    • Facilitate strategic planning efforts and strategy implementation for the CAPS department
    • Contribute to the evaluation of outcomes by ensuring the tracking and evaluation of measurable indicator data, compiling and producing reports regarding mental health and wellness variables
    • Assist in developing and implementing activities for specific projects and programs within CAPS
    • Coordinate and plan ongoing outreach and promotion of counseling services as well as annual mental health and wellness awareness activities at various SCC locations
    • Work collaboratively to plan and develop leadership, service learning and training opportunities for students including, but not limited to alcohol and other drug awareness, relationship violence, bystander intervention, resiliency, mental and emotional wellbeing and interpersonal relationship skills
    • Provide training for faculty and staff concerning community recourses and services available to students
    • Contribute to CARE Team and other collaborative student supportive services as needed in absence of the Director of CAPS
    • Promote and support the college's diversity goals; promote/support access, fair employment, EEO, equity and diversity programs and initiatives
    • Promote the college's organizational environment goals; maximize operational efficiency by enhancing policies and procedures, staffing and communications process and practices.     • Maintain confidentiality of student information, records and documentation files
    • Maintain office hours and levels of service for CAPS program at all SCC locations as needed

    Marginal Functions


    • Presents both internal and external public presentations
    • Represents the college at events related to college student mental health or the college as required
    • May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required
    • Perform other College functions and duties as assigned
    • Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedule (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based upon the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days and work locations may vary depending upon the needs of Southeast Community College and subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.
    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


    • Knowledge of and skills in facilitating group processes, managing group dynamics, providing positive leadership. Ability to organize and direct group activities for specific tasks (i.e. improving student wellness to positively impact student retention, persistence and completion)
    • Knowledge of post-secondary student development theory, and student mental health best practices and procedures
    • Ability to operate computers, software and related technology equipment including, Microsoft office suite and data base systems (Colleague, CRM Advise, Titanium)
    • Ability to communicate and maintain a positive understanding of the role and mission of the CAPS office. Ability to demonstrate diplomacy required to resolve conflicts and complaints
    • Knowledge of and experience with student success correlates such as the importance of academic preparedness developmental education, family support, balancing work and academics, cost, student success skills, self-care, stress management, persistence, recognizing personal and family risk factors such as a history of substance abuse, managing unexpected events (death in family, etc.), students' personality and dominant traits
    • Ability to meet the necessary travel requirements of the position
    • Familiarity and experience with academic, aptitude and interest tests and measurements instruments and the ability to interpret and use reports
    • Ability to work independently to accomplish strategic plan outcomes
    • Knowledge and experience with data analysis and reporting for the purposes of planning, budgeting and grant writing
    • Ability to lift and carry up to (50) fifty pounds for short distances, move tables, chairs, and media equipment.
    • Ability to communicate effectively both in writing, in person, and on the phone.
    • The individual must possess the above skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
    Minimum Qualifications


    • Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social work, Marriage and Family Therapy
    • Provisional Licensure as Mental Health Practitioner in the state of Nebraska at the time of hire
    • Six months full-time professional work experience providing counseling/mental health/clinical services
    Desired Qualifications


    • Full Licensure as Independent Mental Health Practitioner in the state of Nebraska at the time of hire
    • Supervisory experience
    • Two (2) years full time professional work experience providing counseling/mental health/clinical services
    Salary

    $19-$25 per hour depending on licensure (provisional or full)
