South Texas Blood & Tissue is an AABB-accredited blood bank. It operates nine donor centers in South Texas, distributing blood, plasma, platelets, and other components to regional hospitals and emergency first responders. It also provides starting materials to therapeutic developers, and clinical research services. Its apheresis center received FACT accreditation in 2022 for peripheral blood cellular therapy product collection. As an AATB-accredited tissue bank, it offers tissue recovery from living and deceased donors.

General Summary

Responsible to perform aseptic deceased donor tissue recovery back table procedures at hospitals or other designated facilities in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.

Also responsible for other activities related to the tissue procurement such as: transportation of donors and equipment, collection of donor blood samples, maintenance of surgical instruments and equipment, and proper documentation of all activities.

It is essential that the incumbent have a valid driver's license and be at least 18 years old with a good driving record to meet organization driving standards.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Tasks

Assist in preparing the donor for the aseptic surgical tissue recovery.

Perform all aspects of cadaveric deceased tissue back table activities recovery according to established guidelines including, but not limited to, the culturing, packaging and labeling of recovered tissues..

Obtain or collect required laboratory specimens.

Assist with body reconstruction and disposition of the body after procurement.

Assist in the maintenance of the procurement site before and after tissue procurement. Attend in‐service trainings, meetings, seminars, and other workshops as required.

Exhibit a positive working relationship with co‐workers and the public.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Non‐Essential Tasks

Run departmental errands as directed.

Perform other duties as assigned to support birth tissue and cord blood collections.

Education

Requires a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma.

Licenses and/or Certifications

Valid United States Driver's License

Operating Room Technician or Certified Tissue Bank Specialist preferred

Experience

No prior specific work experience required.

Prefer one year of operating room aseptic procedures and tissue banking experience.

Knowledge

Must obtain a working knowledge of regulatory/quality requirements and perform within all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and policies.

Must have a working knowledge of aseptic surgical procedures.

Skills

Must be capable of operating motor vehicles in all types of weather conditions.

Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.

Must have moderate technical abilities in the surgical field.

Abilities

Must be able to keep information confidential.

Must be able to understand and perform the deceased tissue, living donor tissues and cord blood collection procedures.

Must be neat in appearance and well groomed.

Must be professional, detail oriented, self‐motivated, innovative, creative, assertive, organized, communicative, and have the ability to work independently.
