    Phyllis Wheatley Community Center (PWCC) has proudly served the Minneapolis Community since 1924 and was the first agency in the Twin Cities committed to meeting the human services needs of a growing African American community. For many Blacks, PWCC was a safe port in the midst of a racially segregated city. Although our community remains chronically underserved today, our organization is dedicated to breaking barriers, fostering opportunities, and creating equity and equality for the African American community.

    A Typical Day in the Life...

    A typical day as Phyllis Wheatley's Case Manager - QPA (Quality Parenting Academy) provides an opportunity to work with community members to provide direct-support case management services to an assigned caseload of families. Phyllis Wheatley's Quality Parenting Academy is a partnership between PWCC and Hennepin County to provide resources and education for families who are at risk of mandated or voluntary separation. Responsibilities will include the following:

    • Maintaining a caseload of 20-35 families and checking in with them regularly to provide support with problem solving and accomplishing individualized goals.
    • Providing information and referrals to emergency shelters, permanent housing, chemical or mental health providers, food resources, and other resources as needed.
    • Maintaining accurate client notes, files, and other documentation.
    • Developing relationships with community partner organizations that provide services to crime victims to ensure access and responsiveness to clients' needs.
    • Assessing risk for violence or other abuse and conducting safety planning.
    • Adhering to the ethical and legal codes and policies regarding client confidentiality.
    • Facilitating groups and assisting in program curriculum development and modification.
    • Collecting and reporting necessary data.
    • Assisting the organization in maintenance of a current certification as a Quality Parenting
    • This position may be asked to help with other programs periodically, working the front desk or general administrative support.

    Who You Are

    • You hold an associate degree in human services or a related field; bachelor's degree in education, social work, or a related field is preferred.
    • You have at least 3 years of professional or lived experience.
    • It is preferable if you have experience working with and providing case management for at-risk homeless youth aged 16-24.
    • You have relevant, recent experience working in the human services or nonprofit fields.
    • You preferably have experience with group-facilitated training or psychotherapy and / or have additional trauma informed training in one or more of the following: conflict de-escalation, negotiation, sexual assault, human trafficking, domestic violence, or victim services.
    • You are able to engage participants who may be interacting with the child protection system and assist them in assessing their needs while offering emotional support during times of crisis.
    • You understand Hennepin County and Federal Government benefit programs.
    • You have the ability to work effectively with clients across many dimensions of diversity, including cultural, socioeconomic, gender or sexual orientation, spiritual or religious beliefs.
    • You are able to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
    • You have the ability to work independently and assist clients in crisis during non-traditional hours.
    • You have demonstrable written and oral communication skills.
    • You have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • You have a valid driver's license, access to reliable transportation, and the ability to meet PWCC's driving record requirements. Please note that if the license was not issued in the state of Minnesota, you have 60 days after becoming a Minnesota resident in which to apply for your Minnesota driver's license or permit (not applicable for new hires living out of state).
