The California Department of Justice is hiring two attorneys to join the Appeals, Writs, and Trials Section of the Criminal Law Division in Los Angeles.
Attorneys in this section primarily handle felony criminal appeals, juvenile delinquency appeals, and related writs before the state Courts of Appeal and the California Supreme Court, including death penalty cases. The section's main work involves researching legal issues, writing persuasive briefs, and orally advocating on behalf of the People of California in court. Deputies handle cases involving some of the most challenging legal issues in criminal law, including frequent constitutional issues, complex evidentiary and statutory issues, and appeals involving issues of first impression.
Attorneys also respond to habeas corpus litigation in the United States District Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. Federal habeas litigation may involve discovery and evidentiary hearings. Deputies can expect frequent oral arguments in the California Court of Appeal, as well as occasional appearances in the California Supreme Court, the United States District Court, Central District of California, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
The Los Angeles office also handles recusal motions and trial matters in Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo Counties.
This is a hybrid position under the current DOJ telework policy, which is subject to modification. The position provides the opportunity to work remotely or in the office, or a combination of both, but some in-office attendance is required. Travel and additional in-person attendance may be required for court appearances, meetings, or other operational needs.
