    PURPOSE OF POSITION:

    Under supervision, keep an assigned school building or office space clean and orderly and do other work as required.


    REPORTS TO:
    An assigned supervisor, usually the school principal


    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Sweep, scrub, mop, wax, and oil floors;
    • Vacuum rugs and carpets;
    • Dust and polish furniture and woodwork;
    • Empty and clean waste receptacles;
    • Clean restrooms;
    • Wash windows and walls; clean mini-blinds;
    • Polish metalwork;
    • Take care of equipment and materials;
    • Assist in moving and arranging furniture and equipment and setting up auditorium or classrooms for special events or meetings;
    • Make minor non-technical repairs;
    • Replace lights;
    • Adjust shades, blinds, desks, and other furniture;
    • Clean and pick up paper on grounds and courts;

    Clean classrooms, cafeterias, offices, libraries, kitchens, gymnasiums, hallways, lounges, locker rooms, and other facilities as assigned; dust, sanitize, and wipe down desks, tables, furniture, doors, countertops, equipment, and woodwork; spot mop spills; remove gum, graffiti, and debris as needed.

    Clean up paper and other debris from school grounds, walkways, and areas adjacent to school buildings; empty waste receptacles; and replace trash liners.

    Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities, including sinks, toilets, and urinals; fill dispensers with paper towels, soap, toilet paper, seat covers, and other items; clean mirrors, tile, walls, light fixtures, and windows; and unclog drains and toilets.

    Train and provide work direction to assigned custodial staff; assure proper coverage for work hours and special events; requisition supplies and materials for the custodial crew as needed.

    Clean whiteboards as needed; empty pencil sharpeners; clean tables, chairs, benches, and floors after breakfast, lunch, and recess periods as assigned.

    Lock and unlock doors, windows, and gates as appropriate; set alarm systems as required; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; raise and lower flags as assigned.

    Assist with minor grounds maintenance or general building maintenance, such as painting, as required; replace lights, adjust shades or blinds, adjust desks and other furniture.

    Monitor inventory levels of custodial supplies; pick up and distribute a variety of classroom, office, and custodial supplies as required; maintain custodial equipment in good working order.

    Maintain punctual and consistent attendance.

    AND ABILITIES:
    Basic methods, supplies, and tools used in custodial work


    Ability to:

    • Quickly learn the schedules, procedures, and tools used in custodial work;
    • Work well with those contacted in the course of the work and a willingness to cooperate with faculty and other workers;
    • Perform general custodial and simple maintenance work;
    • Use standard electrical cleaning equipment (vacuums, foggers, blowers, etc);
    • Perform heavy manual labor; and
    • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

    Experience:
    Previous experience performing duties similar to those listed above is desirable.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Indoor and outdoor work environments; exposure to fumes from cleaning chemicals; working from ladders to change, inspect, or replace light bulbs or lamps.

    Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate equipment and tools; bending at the waist, kneeling, crouching, twisting at the waist, or reaching above the head to store or retrieve materials; hearing and speaking to exchange information; standing and walking for extended periods of time; seeing to perform work and read manuals or instructions; lifting and carrying equipment or materials.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS


    AND ABILITIES:
    Knowledge of methods, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in custodial work.

    Knowledge of contemporary cleaning practices, including basic methods of cleaning floors, carpets, furniture, walls, and fixtures in a commercial or institutional setting.

    Knowledge and ability to operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines, blowers, pressure washers, and other equipment as assigned.

    Ability to train and provide work direction to assigned staff.
    Ability to move, adjust, and arrange furniture in classrooms or for special events.
    Ability to perform minor repairs and maintenance to furniture, equipment, or building fixtures.
    Ability to safely use cleaning materials and equipment; observe health and safety regulations; proper lifting techniques.
    Ability to communicate with school staff, site administrators, and District maintenance
    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
    Ability to meet schedules and timelines.

    Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with District staff, co-workers, teachers, and administrators; ability to work independently with limited direct supervision.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    High school diploma or equivalent.
    Two years or more of prior experience in custodial and maintenance work, preferably in a public school setting.
    Valid California Driver's License.
    Must complete fingerprinting process and TB test.
