    Professional Learning Manager

    Queens Botanical Garden is an urban oasis where people, plants and cultures are celebrated through inspiring gardens, innovative educational programs, and demonstrations of environmental stewardship.

    About This Opportunity

    QBG is a professional learning (PL) resource for educators. QBG is one of eight Urban Advantage (UA) cultural institution partners serving the science education goals of teachers in NYC. The Garden's green Visitor & Administration Building and surrounding landscapes also offers PL potential for the fledging field of sustainable systems and green building management.

    The Professional Learning Manager (PLM) will maximize the breath and quality of current training programs and help expand professional development resources to additional sectors. The PLM reports to the Director of Programs and works in conjunction with education and other Garden staff. The PLM is responsible for the management and facilitation of professional development for participating Urban Advantage teachers. The PLM will partner with the Department of Education (DOE) and other organizations on items such as the development, coordination and teaching of P-credit classes and other professional development opportunities. The PLM may teach environmental workshops provided by QBG and provide horticulture and education support throughout the education department as needed.

    Responsibilities:

    • Developing and coordinating the fulfillment of all aspects of professional learning, including all cycles of UA professional learning sessions.
    • Attending regular monthly and special UA meetings to collaborate on long-term goals, plan new initiatives, and plan special UA events.
    • Works with UA stakeholders, partners and lead teachers to achieve professional learning goals.
    • Building and maintaining relations with the DOE and other educational organizations.
    • Developing, coordinating and teaching professional development opportunities for other professional participants and professional groups.
    • Coordinating with QBG education staff regarding UA resources for students, parents, and administrators.
    • Managing grant related budgets, data tracking, and preparing reports.
    • Assisting with children and family program instructions, public programs, Garden wide events, and events in the community, as needed.
    • Providing on and offsite assistance to teachers and schools.
    • Supervise and support QBG relevant UA staff.

    Qualifications:

    • Experience in standards-based science teaching, such as NGSS and Amplify Minimum Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in environmental science or other science disciple (preferably life sciences), (B.A. acceptable with teacher certification and minimum of four years' experience as an educator). Master's preferred.
    • Science teaching experience preferred. Experience in outdoor education and botany, a plus.
    • Knowledge of local, state and national science standards.
    • Train the trainer/professional development experience.
    • Experience supervising and mentoring staff.
    • Administrative experience including budget and inventory management.
    • Experience, interest and ability to work with multi-cultural communities
    • Ability to work independently and lead projects with a team
    • Strong computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
    • Excellent verbal, writing and organizational skills.
    • P-Credit certification a plus.

    Schedule:

    This is a full-time, exempt position with weekly on-site work, and some flexibility to work remotely. Schedule is generally Monday through Friday, with some required weekends and evenings throughout the year.
