    DEFINITION:


    Under general supervision of the VPI/CIO and the Agriculture Department Chair and in coordination with Ag faculty and staff, provides instructional and student assistance, assists in facilitating the day to day program operations, assists in the development and maintenance of instructional materials, assists in recruiting prospective students, provides supportive duties including livestock health care, equine reproduction for the various Agriculture activities, and to perform related duties as assigned.

    This position serves the Agriculture Department generally but is primarily focused on activities that support equestrian instruction.


    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:


    This position assists students and faculty in the Agriculture Department by providing the additional assistance necessary to maintain a safe and productive educational environment.

    This position could have a variable/flexible work schedule from time to time it may require working some nights and/or weekends some overnight travel throughout the year CLASSIFICATION:

    Jan 2024Required QualificationsAssociate degree in agricultural, or related fieldOne year of related work experienceDemonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic and socio-economic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.

    Desirable QualificationsBachelor's degree in agricultural, or related fieldTwo years of related work experienceCommunity College experienceExperience and/or skills in:

    Instructing students in various equine topicsManaging or assisting operating similar livestock activitiesParticipating in horse shows, rodeos and related activitiesExtracurricular activities-clubs committees, scholarships, internships, sports, and community servicesManaging or assisting in equine reproductive proceduresEssential DutiesThe following duties are typical of those performed by employees in this job title; however, employees may perform other related duties, and not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each employee in the job title.

    Provides individual and group instructional assistance to students in Departmental classes with a special focus on equine studies classes and all other related Ag Dept.

    programs and events (e.g., annual Horse Sale, Day in the Mountains and Clinics)


    Assists in coordinating, directing, and supervising students with their day to day operational tasks ( e.g., heath care, feeding equine livestock, student boarders and general facilities maintenance)Supports course teaching duties (e.g.

    , prepare course materials, read and score assignments, quizzes and tests)Assists in setting up labs and classroom teaching materialsLeads group instructional and tutoring sessions within assigned subject mattersWorks with student interns, faculty and staff in maintaining College livestock, especially those in the equine programEstablish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and individuals with special needs, including learning, physical and behavioral disabilitiesCoordinate vendors (vet care, shoeing, breeding, and nutrition of all foundation horses)Provides various equine heath care and breeding duties (routine vet care, mare care, breeding )Assists in recruiting for the equine studies program:

    developing packets, mailings, set up and give tours, help students find housing, and guide prospective students through registrationAssists in coordinating record keeping for the Student Horse Boarding Student Horse Purchasing programs and annual College Horse SaleProvides and relays information and maintains contact with a variety of college departments and external agenciesCoordinate record keeping for the Student Employee/Volunteer ProgramsMaintains a variety of files and recordsControlling equipment and supplies (ordering and inventorying supplies, equipment and tack)

    Correspondence (preparing and/or maintaining effective reports and records, responding to program inquiries)Assists in maintaining/managing of restricted, unrestricted, and foundation budgetsKnowledge of:
    Methods and techniques of individual and group learning assistancePrinciples of horsemanship including training, conformation, horseshoeing and general health careOffice practices and procedures including filing, office equipment operationPrinciples of ranch and livestock management (feeding, vet care, equine reproduction scheduling vendors , ordering and administering annual vaccinations/worming, completing breed registrations and transfers)

    Skill in:

    Effective communication skills, both orally and written;Advanced horsemanship and the ability to school and train horsesPerforming general health care and maintenance to livestockPerforming equine reproduction proceduresEstablishing and maintaining effective working relationships with fellow staff membersOperating standard computer software for Windows and Adobe-based platformsPreparing and maintaining a variety of records, forms and reportsPreferred QualificationsCompliance Physical CharacteristicsThe physical abilities involved in the performance of essential duties with or without reasonable accommodations are:Physical Demands SummaryVision to read and review student work, administer and score tests and assist students with other academic materialsHearing and speech to understand and respond to questions and provide instructions and lead group instructional sessionsLifting, pushing and pulling equipment weighing up to 50 pounds (saddle a horse) Walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching and climbing This work is performed in a classroom, office and outside learning setting in various weather conditions.
