    Position Summary

    The purpose of this position is to perform skilled, semi-skilled, and administrative work in maintaining the fire trucks, vehicles, and mechanical equipment of the Department. This is a non-merit position.

    Essential Job Functions

    The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
    • Performs mechanical repair work on Department equipment such as, but not limited to: fire pumpers, ladder trucks, boats and other vehicles; performs tune-ups, brake work, transmission and engine work, hydraulics and electrical work.
    • Assists Maintenance Chief carry out and evaluate preventive maintenance schedules for all fire trucks, vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors. This work includes, but is not limited to: Oil and fluid changes, lubrication jobs, radiator servicing, brake inspections, air conditioning servicing, and other related tasks.
    • Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, hydraulic, and air-driven tools.
    • Under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Chief, the mechanic services, repairs and tests trucks, vehicles and mechanical equipment.
    • Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work including, but not limited to: Filters, belts, hoses, pumps, batteries, lights, and fuses.
    • Inspects fire trucks and vehicles to ensure readiness for service; documents and schedules needed repairs and maintenance.
    • Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.
    • Performs other duties as required by the Maintenance Chief.
    • The ability to perform effectively with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as, but not limited to; fire, smoke, moisture, dirt, dust, snow, rain, severe weather, odors, grease, oil, cleaners, wetness, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, motors, vibrations, electric currents, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, fumes, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, etc.
    • The capability of containing personal physical and emotional control in chaotic circumstances that may be beyond one's control.
    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Detailed knowledge of department vehicles and other motorized equipment including, but not limited to: diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding.
    • Ability to observe price trends and grades of quality of materials and equipment.
    • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities.
    • Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.
    • Ability to utilize a variety of reference, descriptive and design data and information.
    • Ability to exercise discretion in identifying and selecting from alternative courses of action.
    • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and to calculate decimals, percentages, including knowledge of metric measurements and conversions.
    • Skill in operation of a variety of tools and equipment, including, but not limited to: mechanical tools, diagnostic machines, hand tools, welders and torches, etc. In addition, equipment and supplies associated with firefighting, EMS and rescue activities including, but not limited to, personal protective equipment, radios, cameras, gas detectors, chain saws, smoke ejectors, extrication tools, hand tools, pumps, foam chemicals, first aid equipment, etc.
    • Ability to operate a motor vehicle to conduct work activities.
    • Ability to exert heavy to extremely heavy, though not constant, physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials weighing up to and exceeding 100 pounds.
    Qualifications Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
    • High school diploma or GED, supplemented by vocational or technical training in fire pump maintenance and repair.
    • Minimum of three (3)years completed experience as a mechanic on heavy construction equipment, fire apparatus and combustion and diesel engines.
    • Or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid Indiana appropriate CDL driver's license.
    This part time position is not eligible for benefits.
