- This position involves welding pipe of various metals on ships or in shops to support mechanical repairs and modernization of marine vessels, including those of the US Naval, Military Sealift Command, and commercial ships. The journeyman welder also provides guidance to assigned helpers.
- Ability to understand instructions, drawings, and correspondence.
- Working knowledge of ship repair terminology and compartment naming convention.
- Physically and medically capable of wearing all required personal protective equipment (PPE) as per OSHA standards.
- Effective communication of job-related information through condition reports.
- Thorough knowledge of welding theories.
- Provide guidance to pipe welding helpers.
- Adhere to work schedules and safety protocols.
- Complete assigned tasks accountably.
- Comply with safety standards and maintain a clean work area.
- Ensure readiness for hot work and maintain quality standards.
- Resolve task-related issues by conferring with supervisors.
- Inspect and prepare work areas for welding.
- Document conditions and assist with safety protocols.
- Inspect and correct weld defects.
- Participate in Lock-out Tag-out procedures.
- Lift and move weights of different loads.
- Work at heights and in confined spaces.
- Demonstrate good balance and hand coordination.
- Handle tools and operate equipment.
- Respond to commands and perceive object attributes.
