    Work with a team to design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot Marquette University campus network infrastructure and topology, both Cisco wired and Cisco wireless. One focus for this position will be assisting in optimizing Cisco wireless infrastructure in buildings on campus, and optimizing settings/placement as MU rolls-in upgrades to Wi-Fi 6/6E, so wireless management experience is required.

    Assist in troubleshooting endpoints and client issues and provide technical guidance on projects. Research and testing of new and emerging technologies in partnership with vendors. Works as part of a team of network engineers, to ensure that the campus network environment is reliable, available, and performant.

    Most of daily work activity is typically performed remote, but onsite work is required for wireless surveys, after- hours emergencies, testing emerging technologies, all-hands meetings, special projects, and for in-depth hands-on troubleshooting--ideally, applicants should be able to arrive on campus in under an hour of travel time.

    Responsibilities

    • Configure and install various network devices and services (e.g., wireless controllers, routers, switches)
    • Perform wireless site surveys, tune Access Point radios, recommend placement changes as needed.
    • Perform network maintenance and system upgrades including service packs, patches, hot fixes and security configurations
    • Evaluates and analyzes network performance metrics to ensure successful operation of the network
    • Identifies and evaluates problems. Determines the risk areas and mitigates their impact.
    • Participate in the design of extensions and additions to the network and incorporation of new technologies and standards
    • Design, develop and maintain configuration standards for network equipment. Serve as an escalation point for network issues, including backbone routing and switching, edge configuration, and Internet related services
    • Work with vendors and partners to develop "test plans" and "pilot projects" for new and emerging technologies
    • Work with project managers, network and systems administrators and engineers for planning long-term and short-term networking and new technologies
    • Work within established configuration and change management policies to ensure awareness, approval and success of changes made to the network infrastructure
    • Participate in after-hours on-call rotation and be available to mitigate network issues during unplanned events
    • Tier-3 Campus wireless and wired network help-desk ticket triage
    • Assist in keeping network infrastructure documentation up to date and assist in inventories for Cisco support renewal work
    • Ensures that network security policy and practices are followed, implemented, and maintained Assist System Administrators as necessary
    • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested

    Functional and Technical Competencies

    • Familiarity with management and care-and-feeding of Cisco Wireless LAN controllers
    • Understanding of Cisco ISE (Identity Services Engine) troubleshooting and management
    • Extensive knowledge in troubleshooting and engineering Cisco wired and managed wireless networks with use of Cisco SNMP appliances (Prime Infrastructure, DNAC, Cacti, etc)
    • Ability to perform wireless network surveys using several different applications and hardware including Ekahau, Cisco DNA Center, Prime Infrastructure Planning, Apple Airport, etc.
    • Spec, Build, and deploy Cisco multilayer modular and stackable switches to be used throughout campus and routinely upgrade and perform preventative maintenance on and off hours
    • Extensive experience and skill working via Cisco IOS command-line interface
    • Understanding of IPv4 addressing and DNS configuration and management (Infoblox)
    • Familiarity with Cisco Campus Network design best practices
    • Understanding of enterprise-level network-related security best practices
    • Demonstrated experience performing a customer service role in a high-pressure environment, supporting a large user base and working with a help-desk ticketing system such as Freshservice

    Education/Training and Certification

    • CCNA or CCNP-level Cisco certifications (e.g. Routing and Switching, Wireless) or, alternatively, 7 or more years of demonstrated large enterprise Cisco-based network management experience
    • Bachelors or Masters degree required

    Experience

    • Minimum of 7 years of overall IT experience that includes hands-on operational support of systems
    • with at least 5 years of direct hands-on implementing, configuration, and management of networked
    • devices such as Cisco campus wireless infrastructure, Cisco routers, switches, and cabling, as well
    • as working with addressing schemes, VLANs, DNS to support a large 1000+ user LAN/WAN campus network
    • environment.

    Environment and/or Physical Factors

    Position requires occasional lifting and carrying of equipment (10-25lbs) and some work in tight confined spaces (data closets). Position requires ability to work afterhours and occasionally on weekends as part of an on-call rotation or during emergencies.

    Desired Qualifications

    • Experience configuring, upgrading, and troubleshooting Cisco ISE and Cisco wireless LAN controllers
    • Experience tuning/placing Cisco AP infrastructure to maximize wireless experience
    • Experience with wired 802.1x authentication implementation and troubleshooting
    • CCNA Wireless Certification and Cisco CCNA Routing & Switching
    • CompTIA Networks+ Certification
    • Experience developing scripts for automation
    • Some familiarity with VOIP related components, design and infrastructure
    • Some familiarity with enterprise firewall and security appliances
    • Some familiarity with Load balancers, specifically F5
