    Role Summary

    The Surgical Technician will engage in surgical support services such as animal preparation, note taking, anesthesia monitoring, study setup, surgical record review, and facilitating surgical staff in completing studies in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner.

    This is a non-exempt role that has no supervisory responsibilities and is eligible for overtime after 40 hours in a work week.

    Role Responsibilities
    Assist with operation maintenance of surgical equipment.
    Stocking standard surgical supplies.
    Sterilization and preparation of surgical suites, equipment, and tools.
    Surgical sanitation and aseptic technique with surgical site preparation.
    Drug calculation and administration including eye drops, topical, subcutaneous, intravenous, intramuscular, intraperitoneal, and catheter placement.
    Use of anesthesia machines including anesthesia monitoring, assessment of depth, patient monitoring, and vital sign monitoring.
    Intubation/ extubation, induction of anesthesia, ventilation.
    Paper and electronic data collection, including detailed observations, note-taking, and data review.
    Ability to handle common laboratory species.
    Assisting with or performing humane euthanasia procedures as necessary.
    Waste management including proper disposal of biohazard materials and chemicals.
    Other duties as assigned.

    Role Requirements
    High School Diploma/GED required.
    Bachelor's degree in animal or life sciences with a minimum of 6 months experience preferred.
    SRA or ALAT certification preferred. Required to begin the application process for SRA certification within 2 years of hire.
    Proficient with Microsoft Office core applications and the ability to learn and use additional applications.
    Good written and oral communication skills.

    Special Requirements
    This role will spend approximately 15% of time in an office setting and 85% of time in the laboratory. There will be exposure to animal pathogens and chemicals. There will be handling of, and/or exposure to, animal tissues and zoonotic organisms.
    Ability to don and wear personal protective gear, including N95 masks and respirators.

    Physical activity includes lifting (up to 50lbs), carrying (up to 40lbs for up to 50 feet), pushing/pulling (up to 75lbs force), reaching, gripping/pinching, standing, and ascending ladders without restriction.

    Ability to spend most of the day standing or walking.
    Ability to work beyond typical work schedule including evenings, weekends, and extended shifts with short notice.
