    Examples of DutiesJob PurposeUnder direction, plans, directs, and controls the activities of a bureau of the Health Department.
    Essential Job DutiesPlans, organizes, directs, controls, and evaluates the programs and services provided by a Health Department bureau. Supervises public health managers, professionals, and support staff.
    Coordinates the activities of the bureau with services provided by other health agencies.
    Provides advice and consultation to staff and serves as a liaison with other health care providers and agencies.
    Plans, prepares, and administers operating and grant budgets.
    Directs the preparation and maintenance of records, reports, correspondence, and grant proposals.
    Interprets and develops standards, policies, and procedures governing program operations.
    Develops, implements, and modifies programs and services provided by the bureau.
    Examines and diagnoses patients. Formulates, prescribes, and administers required medical or psychiatric treatments in difficult or sensitive cases. Provides psychotherapy to individuals and groups. Examples of Other DutiesPerforms other related duties as required. Represents the Department at county and state meetings.

    QualificationsRequired QualificationsGraduation from a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education with a degree of Doctor of Medicine;PlusAt least four years' public health experience, two years of which were in a supervisory capacity.

    Private practice may be substituted on a two years for one-year basis for the required public health experience.

    ORPossession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of Maryland issued by the Maryland Board of Physicians;PlusAt least four years' public health experience, two years of which were in a supervisory capacity.

    Preferred Qualifications Experience in communicable diseaseSkill in the supervision of public health professionals and support staffKnowledge of public health principles, practices, procedures, and methodsLicense and CertificatesPossession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of Maryland issued by the Maryland Board of Physicians is required at the time of appointment.

    EXAMINATION PROCEDUREApplicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions.

    Physical and Environmental Conditions The work of this classification includes the performance of physical activities such as walking and standing and the operation of medical equipment and instruments.

    Medical Examination and Employment Background InvestigationApplicants selected for employment with Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screening and employment investigation, including, but not limited to criminal background, education certification and fingerprinting checks.
