- Possess a basic knowledge of ocular physiology, anatomy, pathology, optics, and refraction; and ophthalmic procedures, instrumentation, and techniques as related to the field of eye care.
- Possess familiarity with refractive surgery to include PRK and LASIK procedures and associated testing to work up a refractive surgery candidate (i.e. Wavescan/VISX iDesign).
- As assigned, perform collection and data entry for surgery patients, especially but not limited to demographics, preoperative data, operative data, and postoperative data and observations, test results, and analysis.
- Cross training between staff in Ophthalmology and/or Refractive Surgery departments is expected. Staff will be assigned to the work center location, depending on day-to day needs.
- Function independently and manage a busy caseload.
- Perform basic visual acuity tests.
- Measure and record distance and near vision; perform color testing and pinhole vision
- Perform the following: Lensometry; Autorefraction, Auto keratometery and manual refractions; Automated visual field testing; Ophthalmic photography; Glare Testing; Tonometry; Pupilometry; Corneal Pachymetry.
- Assess Corneal topography and perform other cornea/refractive diagnostic testing.
- Assist during surgery.
- Perform other tasks as directed by the physician
- Certificate.
- Complete an ophthalmology technician or an optometric technician course
- Possess and maintain current certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology or a completed a formal ophthalmic training program of the United Stated Armed Forces.
- Experience: Possess a minimum of one (1) year of full-time (forty (40) hours per week) experience as an Ophthalmic Technician within the preceding three (3) years. At least 1 year working in an eye practice (Ophthalmology or Optometry) performing functions such as the following: visual acuity, color vision testing, automated visual fields, topography, applanation tonometry, slit lamp photography, and assisting in surgical procedures.
