Postdoctoral Fellow in Psychology
The Rosemary Furman Counseling Center at Barnard College is seeking applicants for one postdoctoral fellowship position for the academic year. This one-year, full-time, hybrid fellowship exposes an emerging psychologist to the various dimensions of working in college student mental health. Upon completion of the fellowship, fellows will be prepared for independent clinical work at a university counseling center or other clinical setting that works with a young adult population. The fellowship consists of at least 1,750 hours of supervised professional psychological activities and meets supervised experience requirements for licensure in New York State.
PRIORITY APPLICATION DEADLINE: 1/9/2026
PROPOSED FELLOWSHIP START DATE: 8/31/2026
Job Description:
The Furman Counseling Center provides psychological services to 3,100 undergraduate students attending a diverse, historically women's, residential liberal arts college in Manhattan's Morningside Heights neighborhood. Our Center is highly utilized as we see approximately one third of Barnard's student body every year. Our Center provides short-term individual psychotherapy; support and therapy groups; psychiatric evaluations and short-term medication management; outreach, consultation, and training for the wider Barnard community; crisis and emergency mental health services; and referrals for long-term treatment. At Furman, our clients range in diagnoses. We see a variety of presenting concerns that can include mild to severe affective disorders, substance use, eating disorders, adjustment to college and developmental challenges of emerging adulthood, grief, significant trauma histories, family of origin concerns, chronic suicidal ideation, etc. We are a small, interdisciplinary team of 10 clinicians (including 2 psychiatrists), 3 administrative staff, one postdoctoral fellow, and graduate student trainees in psychology and social work. The team supports Barnard College's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion by considering the impact of systems of oppression on mental health, attending to our own social identities and biases, and promoting equitable access to care. Our Center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). We approach training through an integrative framework that incorporates psychodynamic, multicultural, and social justice lenses, and evidence-based interventions (e.g., CBT, DBT, mindfulness).
The postdoctoral fellow will conduct triage screenings, intakes, and short-term individual and group psychotherapy, and will participate in the after-hours on-call rotation. The fellow will receive two hours of weekly individual supervision from senior staff psychologists and will participate in staff meetings, professional development trainings, and weekly Client of Concern meetings. They may also pursue a special interest area or project (i.e. outreach programming, group work, etc.) with mentorship from Center staff. The fellowship is a 35-hour per week hybrid position. Hours are 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday. The position comes with a competitive salary and benefits package. In addition, the center provides financial support towards EPPP materials and professional development opportunities. Three hours per week are allotted towards studying for the EPPP and/or professional development (research, trainings, etc.) Towards the mid-point of their fellowship year, the postdoc will receive mentorship and guidance around the licensure process from the training director.
Responsibilities Include:
- Provide triage screenings and psychological evaluations
- Provide short-term individual therapy
- Assist clients with long-term referrals to outside providers as needed
- Opportunity to facilitate a group or workshop series

1.5 hours of Staff Meeting and Client of Concern Meetings
2 hours received of individual supervision
