    Job Title:Underwriter - I

    Department:Personal Lines Underwriting

    Reports To:Senior Underwriter, Personal Lines

    FLSA Status:Exempt

    SUMMARY

    Approves, modifies, or denies routine Personal Lines risks primarily through renewal, and endorsement underwriting within Company Personal Lines underwriting guidelines and philosophy by performing the following duties.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Reviews and approves, modifies or denies Personal Lines new business submissions of routine complexity.
    • Underwrites renewal business utilizing critical thinking and decision-making regarding loss recommendations, pricing/deductible modification, and non-renewals.
    • Approves, modifies or denies Personal Lines endorsement processing that may include reinstatement of direct notice of cancellation for non-pay or underwriting reasons.
    • Performs the above described job duties by examining such Personal Lines documents as inspection reports, claims' files, application forms, and medical reports to determine degree of risk from such factors as applicant financial standing, age, occupation, accident experience, and value and condition of property.Recommends risk improvements, as necessary.
    • Effectively applies Personal Lines product knowledge including, but not limited to, Company Personal Lines underwriting guidelines and policy forms, Insurance Services Office's manuals and forms, as well as knowledge of rating processes for all Company Personal Lines product offerings.
    • Reviews and submits Personal Lines higher-level risks for decision-making to Personal Lines Underwriter II, Lead or Senior Underwriters.
    • Responds to basic Claims Reports to Underwriting (CRU), and makes recommendations for any actions, if needed.
    • Collaborates with team members on Personal Lines projects as defined and directed by Management, Technical Specialists, or Senior Underwriters.
    • Communicates with territory managers, marketing representatives, and agency personnel, to obtain further information, quote rates, or to explain company underwriting policies, utilizing available resources including PC network/Company computer system, telephone, facsimile, and e-mail.
    • Ensures accurate entry of data into the Company's computer system, and documents via the Imaging System.
    • Trains Personal Lines Associate Underwriters on the-job, as assigned.
    • Develops and maintains positive Company/Agency relations which will include agency travel and may include attendance at various conventions/meetings or educational requirements.(May include overnight stays.)
    • Able to travel 10-20% of the time.
    • Other duties may be assigned.

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

    Bachelor's degree; and 2-3 of related experience and or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

    COMPUTER SKILLS

    To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Office Productivity software such as Spreadsheet, Word Processing, Communications software, and Underwriting-related software.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    The Company may expect the employee to acquire, within a reasonable period of time as established by the Company, the Associate in General Insurance (AINS Series); and/or the Associate in Underwriting (AU) designation; and/or the Associate in Personal Insurance (API); sponsored by the Insurance Institute of America.

    The Company may expect the employee to take other courses it deems appropriate to the employee's duties and responsibilities.
