- Graduation from a college or university with a bachelor's degree in either education or a human services related field.
- Experience with education or related human service activities; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, abilities and skills in substance abuse prevention.
- Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
- Prevention Specialist Certification through the State of Iowa within the first 18 months of employment.
- Knowledge of different prevention strategies including Strategic Prevention Framework.
- Knowledge of human growth and development.
- Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of substance abuse including pharmacological factors.
- Knowledge of the Code of Ethics for Prevention Specialists.
- Ability to communicate through public speaking.
- Ability to provide ongoing program development based on the assessment and evaluation process.
- Ability to work a varied schedule to include some evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
- Ability to perform the physical demands of the position with or without reasonable accommodation where applicable.

The Prevention Specialist is responsible for providing comprehensive substance abuse prevention services to the counties identified in the grant's RFP (request for proposal). The Prevention Specialist utilizes evidenced based curriculum and one-time presentations to facilitate programming with specified populations within the community (universal, selective, indicated). The Prevention Specialist will also address social norms through media campaigns, engage in information dissemination and policy change. The work requires utilizing a special set of; knowledge, experience, training, and skills to encourage healthy attitudes and behaviors which prevent the use/abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. The Prevention Specialist works with community coalitions and stakeholders to promote substance abuse prevention. The individual serves as a resource for the area.
