    Job Opening: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Fusion Technology

    The Fusion Technology Group within the Fusion Energy Division (FED) at ORNL is on the lookout for a postdoctoral research associate to contribute to the advancement of plasma heating, current drive, and integrated radio frequency (RF) technology development as part of initiatives supported by the U.S. DOE Office of Science Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) Program along with other relevant public and private collaborations.

    Major Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Support intricate research and engineering projects involving high-power sources, RF hardware, plasma heating in fusion and similar fields.
    • Design and analyze complex systems including RF sources, plasmas, and magnetic field interactions in extreme environments such as vacuum and high temperatures.
    • Share analysis and experiment results through various mediums like presentations, reports, conference papers, and peer-reviewed journals.
    • Collaborate with industrial, academic, and laboratory partners on multi-disciplinary projects.
    • Manage the fabrication and testing of prototype components and full-scale power systems.

    Basic Qualifications:

    • A PhD in physics or electrical engineering, or a related field completed within the last 5 years.
    • Proficiency in RF environments concerning plasma physics, sources, components, and plasma-material interactions.
    • Proficient in scientific analysis software like Python, MATLAB, or equivalent tools.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience in designing, constructing, and operating RF plasmas with integrated diagnostics and measurement systems for fusion plasma devices.
    • Familiarity with multi-physics simulation tools like COMSOL Multiphysics.
    • Background in experimental plasma physics or diagnostics.
    • Knowledge of plasma and/or neutral transport models and modeling codes.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in diverse teams.
    • Self-motivated with creative collaboration skills in a fast-paced research environment.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and adapt to evolving requirements.

    Candidates must have completed their Ph.D. within the last five years before applying and must fulfill all degree requirements before starting the role. The initial appointment duration is for up to 24 months with possible extensions based on performance and funding availability.
