    Description

    General Statement

    Performs professional structural engineering work under supervision. As Assistant Head of Structural Design Section, supervises design and making of plans, estimates, and specifications for various structures.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Assigns, coordinates, supervises, and reviews work of subordinate personnel.
    • Prepares cost justification/comparison analysis of alternate plans.
    • Oversees and prepares cost estimates for structural components.
    • Coordinates project authorization requests and design criteria documents.
    • Communicates with staff, consultants, contractors, and vendors; reviews submittals.
    • Acts as Section Head in absence of Managing Structural Engineer.

    Other Job Functions

    • Inspects structures for defects, deterioration, and safety; recommends necessary repairs.
    • Responds to correspondence from contractors and other sections during projects.
    • Performs assigned duties.

    Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Extensive knowledge of structural engineering fundamentals and principles.
    • Thorough knowledge of supervisory principles.
    • Considerable knowledge of wastewater engineering and modern office management.
    • Skill in performing structural calculations.
    • Ability to evaluate design work, develop detailed specifications, and solve complex problems.
    • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely.
    • Ability to understand structural engineering design criteria and specifications.

    Absolute Requirements

    Must be a Registered Structural Engineer in the State of Illinois.

    Minimum Qualification Requirements

    Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university majoring in civil or structural engineering and six years of full-time post-degree structural engineering experience, including supervision of engineers.

    Substitution

    Full-time graduate study in structural engineering may be substituted for non-supervisory experience.

    Promotional Requirement

    • One year of service as a Senior Civil Engineer or Senior Structural Engineer with the District.
    • Civil service status in one of the classifications.
