Description

Performs a variety of manual laboring duties in the Department of Development & Infrastructure; performs related work as required.

• May sweep and clean streets and gutters, may collect and load refuse into an accompanying truck or movable can; may rake leaves from streets and load into trucks, may shovel snow and break ice from streets and loads on trucks.
• May work from rear of a packer type truck collecting garbage, trash, compost, discarded items and other refuse from house to house and other sources loading refuse into hopper, applies violation notices and operates mechanism to load dumpsters and pack refuse into truck.
• May pick up loose or spilled materials to assure all material is collected.
• May perform pick and shovel work on asphalt, concrete and unpaved streets.
• May perform simple tasks involved in building and repairing sidewalks, culverts, sewers, curbs, gutters, inlets and catch basins.
• May load and unload trucks and care of pipe, cement, and a variety of materials.
• May dig trenches and lay electrical underground ducts.
• May skim clarifiers, wash signs and signal tanks.
• May on occasion operate various equipment that does not require a CDL.
• Performs any related work as required.
• High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• Ability to read and write.
• Ability to follow simple oral instructions.
• Ability to perform strenuous manual labor.
• Ability to withstand exposure to variable weather conditions and to perform work which is generally out of doors.
• Ability to meet the physical, mental and visual standards of the job.
• Ability and willingness to work in a manner that will not needlessly endanger the safety to one's self, other persons, and equipment.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

• Must possess a valid State of Michigan motor vehicle operator's license.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, hear, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or operate objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms.

The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, taste and smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Employees hired by the City must maintain residency as follows:
Local within 20 miles of the nearest boundary of the City of Flint.
