    Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is seeking a highly qualified Software Engineer Intern to develop advanced algorithms for the Intelligence and Defense communities. The engineer will join a collaborative team of engineers and scientists developing modeling and simulation software.

    This internship will run through the summer months and is intended to expose the intern to modern software development methodologies within Applied Research Associates.

    Software Engineer Intern Responsibilities

    The ideal candidate will actively be interested in applying math/statistics/engineering concepts to solve multi-disciplinary problems. The candidate should be interested in improving/optimizing/tuning existing algorithms as well as developing new algorithms from scratch. This will include software design, software development, and debugging / issue resolution.

    Candidates will have the opportunity to work on prototype scale applications in a variety of deployment surfaces. These include Unreal Engine 5, CesiumJS (Web), ThreeJS (Web), and Android (for Frontend). For backend development candidates will be exposed to Docker Engine, Kubernetes.

    Candidates will be expected to present on their work at the completion of the internship. This will include an in-person presentation to technical staff.


    Our office utilizes a hybrid schedule where onsite work at our Orlando, Florida office is required on Monday and Tuesday for 8 hours each day.

    A detailed schedule for the remaining days will be agreed upon after evaluation of any ongoing coursework/travel limitations and will be agreed upon at hire time.

    This internship is only open to currently enrolled students at Florida Polytechnic in Lakeland Florida.

    Required Software Engineer Intern Qualifications

    US Citizenship (Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information)
    Progress toward BS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field
    Experience with the following programming languages
    Python
    Java
    C/C++
    Experience with Android Studio
    Basic familiarity with Unreal Engine 5
    Team player with excellent communication skills
    Familiarity with Linux Operating Systems
    Basic understanding of Linear Algebra
    Experience with one of the following
    SQLite
    PostgreSQL
    MySQL

    Software Engineer Intern Additional Desirable Qualifications

    Prior/existing security clearance
    Interest in cybersecurity and operations
    Experience presenting on technical concepts to other students or professional staff
    Experience grading and evaluating suitability of junior developer code
