    POSITION SUMMARY:


    The purpose of this position is to provide technical support to a mid-sized cardiovascular research lab at the Aab Cardiovascular Research Institute.

    The individual will work on studies which have as their goal the understanding of basic mechanism involved in RNA biology related to cardiovascular physiology and disease.

    The lab fosters independence in problem-solving and continuing educational development, which is highly valued in applicants. The applicant will provide direct research and teaching support at the professional entry level.


    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Train, educate, document, and oversee compliance of new postdocs, technicians, and rotation graduate students in proper research techniques, use of equipment, health/safety, and animal regulations. Contact person for the Yao Lab concerning radiation safety, EHS, and tissue culture rooms. Ensure established procedures for proper disposal of all hazardous wastes are followed. Oversee lab supply inventory and manage current inventory. Responsible for meeting with administrative staff from UCAR, IBC, Chematix, EH&S, and Pharmacy for the lab inspection and evaluation.
    • Perform molecular assays for gene expression using established protocols. Techniques include but are not limited to molecular cloning, PCR, qPCR, immunoblot, immunofluorescence staining, and imaging. Perform cell culture experiments. Tissue harvesting and isolating mouse primary cardiac myocytes and cardiac fibroblasts, and other terminal studies. Perform histological procedures using lab equipment and following standardized procedures. Analyze data generated in experiments using a computer. The candidate will assist in data interpretation, data preparation for presentation, and experiment troubleshooting with PI.
    • Independently perform experiments, including preparing reports following all experiments and noting problems and assumptions regarding outcomes. Make suggestions and edit scientific reports and documents for the lab. Suggest modification in method and technique as required. Record, calculate, and perform computerized analysis of data obtained. Analyze data as necessary to publish manuscripts and write grant applications. Present data relevant to current projects at lab meetings.
    • Independent maintenance of mouse colonies, including mating, weaning, and tail biopsy for genotyping. Applicant must be adept with Excel spreadsheets, which are used in colony tracking. Independently perform genotyping of genetic knockout mice by PCR followed by phenotyping using established lab protocols and procedures.
    • Write new laboratory procedures and protocols. Act as back-up person in the lab to order specialized materials and supplies with the information provided by lab personnel or PI. Manage up-to-date inventory of lab chemicals and general supplies and serve as the contact person in charge of Chematix, UCAR, and Pharmacy related issues.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor's degree required
    • Master's degree preferred
    • 2-3 years of related work experience involving direct assistance to researchers; or any equivalent combination of experience, training and education. Animal experience is required. The ability to read, write and communicate in English is required.
    • The candidate must have a working knowledge of general techniques and equipment utilized in the laboratory, including computerized pipettes, thermocycler for PCR, molecular cloning, real-time RT-qPCR, gel apparatus, centrifuges, microscopes, tissue culture hood, Western blotting, immunoprecipitation, protein/DNA/RNA isolation. Cell culture experiments including generation of adenovirus vectors or lentivirus. With training, the candidate will learn and work on RNA biology-related assays such as polysome profiling, etc. Use of other equipment may be required and special training will be provided. Candidates will use Image J, Prism, Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, to analyze and present data generated in experiments.

    Pay Range

    Pay Range:
    $46,987 - $65,790 Annually

    _The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job.

    Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
