    Charlotte Hungerford Hospital is a 122-bed, general acute care community hospital located in Torrington, Connecticut, that serves as a regional health care resource for the 100,000 residents of Litchfield County and Northwest Connecticut.

    POSITION SUMMARY/PURPOSE

    Under moderate direction of the Sterile Processing Manager coordinates smooth flow of surgical instrument processing and case cart management activities.

    Serves as liaison between CS and surgical areas concerning all aspects of the case cart system/.

    Communicating and educating CS techs of changes and requirements for sterilization and assembly equipment, supplies and procedure trays, according to established procedures.

    Checks levels and delivers supplies to nursing units. Maintains tracking system data. Knowledge of sterilization standards and procedures and C.S. related medical terminology. Ability to adequately use, or learn to use, the departments computerized system and it associated devices. Attends Connecticut Central Service Association (CCSA) on a regular basis.

    2. Ensures and educates staff on proper decontamination of surgical instruments and equipment in

    order to clean, identify and inspect.


    Processes procedure trays, instruments and equipment through the decontamination room according to established procedures with no more than tow documented errors annually.

    Utilizes detergents, disinfectants, and washers in a prescribed manner for proper cleaning/decontamination and drying, following universal precautions, with no more than two documented errors annually


    Identifies and checks instruments for proper operation and overall condition according to established procedures with no more than two documented errors annually.

    Demonstrates proper body mechanics of all functions

    Trains and/or validates training of CS processing techs in all aspects of decontamination procedures.

    3. Ensures proper assembly and packaging of instrument sets to allow steam penetration and
    sterilization. Collaborates with Sterile Processing Manager
    , OR Clinical Manager and Service
    Leaders to ensure
    flow and availability of OR instruments


    Assembles and wraps procedure trays following the established procedure for each tray with no more than two documented errors annually.

    Coordinates and implements surgical instrument set revisions, additions or deletions as requested by operating room team leaders. Imitates tracking system changes and communicates, educates CS technicians of all assembly requirements.


    Monitors availability and stock levels of all surgical sets prioritizing assembly in order to maintain OR schedule and eliminate need for flash sterilization.

    Operates steam and gas sterilizers, aerator, and other equipment relating to sterilization of supplies, according to written Q.A. procedures with no more than two documented errors annually.

    4. Conducts biological monitoring with SPD Department.
    Performs Bowie Dick and biological testing of all sterilizers in the department daily in accordance with manufacturers recommendations.

    Incubates, interprets and records results of all biological tests, with less than two documentation errors annually.

    Immediately implements recall procedures when positive biological testing is encountered, notifying all effected departments, C.S. Supervisor and Epidemiology Department.

    5. Prepares Code Blue Carts, performs Distribution rounds.
    Maintains prescribed inventory levels for each cart with no more than two documented errors, annually. Makes changes on cart content list as requested and approved by clinical staff.

    Ensures proper rotation of all supplies and carts within and out of the department, as observed by supervisors.

    Monitors Code Blue Carts outside the department according to established Q.A. procedure, within established time frames.

    6. Monitors the work flow of designated shifts to ensure the completion of work assignments to satisfy

    customer expectations.


    Answers telephone in a courteous manner according to department policy, maintaining complete and accurate records of all messages and requests with no more than two documented complaints annually.

    Assigns workload to C.S. aides, taking in consideration priority of work and skill of employee as demonstrated by assignments being completed on time.

    Submits suggestion to facilitate the work flow of the department

    Meets Performance Expectation of Customer Service, Teamwork, Resource Utilization, Staff and Self Development.

    Monitors instrument replacement and maintenance needs to insure availability of functional instrument sets at all time.

    Willingly offers assistance to all others when requested as observed by the Sterile Processing Manager.

    7. Maintains a clean and safe work environment. Contributes to the efficient operation of the
    department.
    Cleans, inspects and maintains equipment according to written procedures, as observed by supervisors.

    Adheres to all safety procedures with particular attention to the operation of sterilizers, with less than two errors annually.

    Employs written procedures when using E.T.O. as observed by supervisors.


    Contributes to the time management of the department by being punctual to work and on job assignment according to hospital standards.


    Supports hospital and SPD department policies, programs, and procedures through works and/or actions as observed by the Sterile Processing Manager.

    Participates in staff meetings as determined by the Sterile Processing Manager.

    Completes work assignments on time/readily accepts assignments as observed by the nurse manager.

    Reports to work on time and is at work as scheduled, as observed by the nurse manager.
