    Description
    The hemodialysis Patient Care Technician is trained in providing hemodialysis therapies to patients with chronic renal failure. The Patient Care Technician works under the supervision of the Administrator, Nurse Supervisor, Registered Nurse and Medical Director. The hemodialysis Patient Care Technician must promote, support and adhere to all policies outlined in the Employee Handbook.

    All RRH employees must perform their job responsibilities according to all RRH Hospital policies, as well as to accrediting organizations, federal and state regulation, and to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines, as applicable.

    Requirements

    1. Performs duties that are required to prepare the equipment and supplies for the dialysis treatments.
    2. Cleans, disinfects and rinses dialysis machines according to protocol.
    3. Prepares machines for hemodialysis treatments, including checking alarms and conductivity.
    4. Troubleshoots machine alarms.
    5. Safely operates all dialysis-related equipment.
    6. Reports machine problems to equipment technician and charge nurse.
    7. Is familiar with all emergency equipment and all emergency operational procedures.
    8. Performs duties to assist with the care of the patient as directed by RN.
    9. Takes vitals and obtains weights of the patients.
    10. Prepares supplies for hemodialysis.
    11. Monitors patients during dialysis treatments.
    12. Report any significant information or change in patient condition to the Charge Nurse as outlined in safety parameters.
    13. Responsible for accurate and timely documentation of information related to patient treatment. This information is documented by the technician in the appropriate patient record.
    14. Is able to recognize changes in patients' status from one treatment to another.
    15. Disinfect all necessary equipment including bicarbonate containers, hemostats and patient clamps as directed per facility protocol.
    16. Stocks hemodialysis carts. Uses efficient, cost effective practices with inventory control and resource use.
    17. Understands and follows prescribed parameters for reporting to RN.
    18. Maintains a safe and clean working environment.
    19. Actively participates in unit staff meetings and in-services.
    20. Seeks resources for direction when necessary.
    21. Performs additional duties and is responsible for specific projects that are assigned according to ability and experience, by the Administrator, Supervising Nurse, Charge Nurse or RN.
    22. Must be able to push and pull heavy medical equipment (on wheels) weighing up to 200 pounds on a daily basis.
    23. Must be capable of verifying visual and audio alarms on machines.
    24. Must be able to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
    25. Must have full range of body motion and flexibility.
    26. Must have ability to climb, reach, kneel, stoop, and bend on a daily basis.
    27. Must comply with all hospital personnel policies.
    28. Mixes bicarbonate according to protocol.
    29. Assist in patient care-plan meetings when appropriate.
    30. Provides in-service education to employees as directed.
    31. Able to initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatment for four patients unassisted per shift.
    32. Performs Primary Care Technician duties.
    33. Is able to open and close the facility independently; including the water treatment room.
    34. Takes call as assigned.
    35. Able to recognize variables in treatment and patients that are different from the usual.
    36. Participates in Lab activities as assigned.
    37. Contributes to investigations, and solutions for unit occurrences with patients and general problems.
    38. Assists with disruptive and non-compliant patients.
    39. Leads team projects.
    40. Reviews policy and procedures as assigned and reports back to management team.
    41. Provides Training (precepting) for new students and employees.
    42. Provides in-service training to staff as directed
    43. Is able to supervise and execute all lab activities.
    44. Participates in developing and implementing patient behavior contracts.
    45. Has advance knowledge in water treatment.
    46. Actively seeks out and participates in continuing education related to dialysis.
