    About the Facility – Cheyenne River Service Unit

    In January 2012, the Eagle Butte Hospital in Eagle Butte South Dakota, was replaced with a newly constructed alternative rural health center. This is a modern, technologically advanced facility with enough space and staff to provide an expanded level of health care services specifically designed to meet the needs of the Cheyenne River Service Unit population. The new facility has an 8 bed acute nursing unit, 2 bed low rick birthing unit, emergency room, expanded outpatient department, dental, community health department and a full array of ancillary (including mammography) and support services. Additionally, several tribally operated programs are incorporated into the new facility. The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe through a 638 contract with HIS, operated four satellite health stations which offer basic ambulatory services at Cherry Creek, Red Scaffold, Swiftbird, and Whitehorse.

    Physician Assistant: RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)
    • The Physician Assistant interviews and examines patients, reviews past medical history, and requests and/or performs diagnostic tests and examines deemed necessary to obtain all possible information related to each case. The Physician Assistant will provide definitive management and full spectrum family ambulatory practice in all medical categories for cases.

    • Review the patient's medications, diet, therapy course, adherence to management plan and patient observations. Will modify regiment as indicated. Shall instruct and counsel patience and family members as required and does so in a culturally sensitive manner.

    • Refer patients to appropriate contracted medical facilities providing full clinical information for care and diagnostic procedures.

    • Assure preparation of appropriate medical records for all patients seen to assure the accumulation and organization of all pertinent clinical data needed to provide comprehensive medical care.

    • Will work closely with allied professionals to advise and coordinate their services at other professionals and the management applications medical, psychological, and social problems.

    • The Physician Assistant provides prenatal care to expected patients in the first and second trimester.

    • Divide pediatric care from newborn to adulthood and is familiar with growth, development, disease states and unique status of pediatric patients.

    • Is active in pre-visit planning of the clinic, coordination of care and participates in clinic improvement activities.

    • Can expect to anticipate evaluating and treating approximately 12 to 20 patients during an eight-hour workday.

    • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures normally performed by family practice nurse practitioners such as, but not limited to performing minor surgery including but not limited to laceration repair and excision of skin lesions.

    • The Physician Assistant performs orthopedic procedures such as joint injections, joint aspirations, aspiration of cysts, trigger point injections and other procedures normally performed by an outpatient physician assistant.


    Physician Assistant: REQUIREMENTS
    • Must have a master's degree in nursing.

    • Experience: Must have a minimum of six months' experience.

    • Education: Completion of a minimum of a master's degree in physician assistant studies.

    • Licensure: Must have an active, unrestricted, and free of disciplinary action license as a nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a Territory of the United States.

    • Certification: Must have a current certification in Basic Life Support.
