    Under the supervision and guidance of the Botanist, assists with executing the Department's Biosecurity Program.

    Compensation:

    $19.67-$25.88/hour (non-exempt)

    Reporting Relationship:

    Reports to: Botanist

    Supervises: Occasionally leads field crew(s), rapid response crews on an occasional basis

    Responsibilities

    Essential Duties
    • Supports and executes the invasive species programs.
    • Assists in overall program planning and operation within the program.
    • Leads biosecurity inspections of incoming plants, as well as routine monitoring of sites around the island for potentially invasive pests.
    • Supports nursery work for Conservation and Island Operations.
    • Conducts physical field assessments and uses various types of monitoring devices to look for potentially invasive species introductions around the island.
    • Conducts assessments and control actions safely and to quality standards per direction and protocols.
    • Prepares and dispenses pesticides and other treatments per labels and protocols.
    • Prepares, maintains and deploys animal and insect traps and monitoring devices.
    • Maintains program equipment.
    • Consistently and accurately enters data for reporting and project tracking, maintains log and schedule for quarantine, and schedule for routine monitoring and surveillance.
    • Communicates within Conservation, and with other departments, external partners, stakeholders, and community members, about biosecurity, including quarantine procedures, expectations, and results.
    • Monitors and tracks control actions and results. May generate status reports.
    • May lead or supervise crews.
    • May participate in wildfire suppression and control.
    • Performs other duties as assigned
    Qualifications

    Qualification/Requirements:
    • Must have a high school diploma, with one year of work experience in natural resource management. Some college coursework is preferred. An internship in natural resource work can be substituted for work experience.
    • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and email.
    • Must be willing and able to learn how to program and use remote monitoring devices, and have the ability to keep equipment and data organized.
    • Experience with GPS preferred.
    • Must have a strong safety ethic.
    • Must be able to drive 4-wheel drive, ATV,and UTV vehicles on off-road conditions.
    • Must have ability to effectively, efficiently, and safely execute instructions and direction.
    • Must have demonstrated knowledge of Hawaiian native flora, fauna, resource issues, and related field methods.
    • Must be able to identify key invasive species, and research appropriate courses of action.
    • Must be willing to work irregular hours, and serve on-call,to assist in other program areas.
    • Must have demonstrated ability to work successfully as a productive team member with people of diverse cultures, ages, and educational backgrounds.
    • Knowledge and experience with Hawaiian language, culture, and/or natural resources preferred; knowledge and experience with Lāna'i resources and people preferred.
    • Must be willing to work in remote field conditions and in inclement weather.
    • Must be willing to fly in and work around helicopters.
    Required Work Cards/Certifications:
    • Must have the ability to obtain Wilderness First Responder and Red Cross First Aid certification.
    • Must have the ability to obtain applicable herbicide and/or pesticide treatment licenses or certification.
    • Must have ability to successfully complete basic wildland firefighter training.
    • Valid Hawaii Driver's License and successful review of Motor Vehicle Record.
    Physical Requirements:
    • Standing and sitting for long periods of time indoors.
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear.
    • The employee is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
    • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision, and color vision.
    • Employee must have the ability to hear normal conversation without the use of amplification or enhancement devices.
    • Standing, moving, and carrying up to 30 lbs. over uneven terrain in inclement weather.
    • Ability to hike over uneven terrain for 3-5 miles.
