    What You Will DoTo provide a complete range of speech-language-cognitive services, with supervision of a licensed and certified speech pathologist.

    Assists patients in reaching their maximum performance and level of functioning, while learning to live within the limits of their capabilities.

    The department of Speech Pathology is a component of Rehabilitation Services.
    Required QualificationsAHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professional (AHA BLS Healthcare) - American Heart Association -REQUIRED

    California RPE Temporary License (Speech-Language Pathologists) - CA Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology & Hearing Aid Dispensers Board -REQUIREDOther Qualification RequirementsEntry level Masters Degree in Speech Pathology; completion and acceptance of applications to proceed to enter Clinical Fellowship (CF) experience from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).Current registration to be completed within the first four weeks of employment with ASHA and pre-approval with the California State Board Examiners.

    Essential Functions

    Clinical competencyASHA Guidelines state:

    The purpose of the clinical fellowship experience is to allow the professional candidate opportunities to integrate theoretical concepts and factual knowledge, acquired through formal and accredited academic preparation, with inclusion of research methodologies, into sound clinical practice.

    Supervision is provided by a pre-designated ASHA certified professional, who assumes all responsibilities for services provided by the CF.

    At the termination of the CF assignment, candidates who:

    demonstrate clinical competence in the defined scope of practice as observed by the CF supervisor and SHA Review Board, successfully complete the NTR Exam, and finalize application processes, will be granted the Certification of Clinical Competence (CCC).

    Evaluation and TreatmentConsults with physicians, supervisor, colleagues and staff on a regular basis about clinical diagnoses, preferred therapeutic and progression of care when indicated.

    At least 80% of the Clinical Fellow's major responsibilities must be in direct client/patient contact (assessment, diagnosis, evaluation, screening, treatment, clinical research activities, family/client consultations, recordkeeping, report writing, and/or counseling).

    Informal exchanges are brief and are verbal or written, but not submitted into the patient's record (e.g. e-mail or brief notes).Performance is ascertained by direct or indirect observation by the clinical fellow mentor.

    DocumentationClinical documentation, including evaluations, progress notes, discharge summaries and required professional correspondence directly and clearly reflect diagnostic results and therapeutic outcomes.

    Documentation is completed in a timely, complete, legible, concise and accurate manner.
    Documentation follows Sharp HealthCare guidelines, professional guidelines, and meets third-party payor and regulatory requirements. Maintains records pertinent to departmental operations.
    Measurement ascertained through supervisory review and observation.
    ProductivityThe CF position is a training experience that complies with ASHA Standards of Practice.

    Management of a full caseload is approved on the conditions that the candidate independently demonstrates complete knowledge of patient needs, makes sound decisions about the implementation of intervention techniques and conducts treatment with full clinical competence.

    Decisions about productivity are made by the department supervisor at the end of the CF experience.

    Professional developmentMeets with CF supervisor to discuss caseload issues and review clinical documentation (all CF's documentation must be approved and co-signed by the CF mentor in a timely manner).

    Reviews professional literature independently or when recommended by the CF mentor and profits from discussions with CF mentor, department members and related staff.

    Exercises discretion and consults with CF mentor prior to sharing new learning with individuals outside of the department.
    Teamwork and department developmentDefines and practices healthcare principles included in the Sharp HealthCare Mission Statement.

    Fully cooperates with all members of the healthcare team to provide customers affordable quality services that can be easily accessed.

    Supports staff and supervisor by providing complete information about cases and related issues.

    Note:

    CSHA and the California State Licensing Board for Speech-Language-Hearing recognize CEU credits earned one year AFTER the CF experience has been completed.

    However, individuals completing their CF are strongly encouraged to participate in professional events to expand their clinical knowledge and begin forming professional relationships.
