- Originate mortgage loans for new members. A new member is defined as a borrower who did not have an established account with the Credit Union before the application was initiated.
- Solicits outside mortgage referrals by attending networking events, and holding luncheons with Realtors, Builders, Developers, Veterans organizations, etc.
- Maintain a pipeline of new referrals through developing a network of professional organizations.
- Conducts training and seminar events such as lunch and learns, after-hours member events, and staff sales training
- Determine financing objectives and goals, conduct the loan interview, and obtain the member information necessary to initiate a loan transaction.
- Analyze member mortgage applications including reviewing and analyzing credit, suggesting the best mortgage product based on member's needs and financial goals, gathering financial data, obtaining information from members to resolve discrepancies such as late payment history, judgments, etc., and communicating loan decisions.
- Educate and update members regarding the loan process, timing, and closing costs.
- Summarize the loan request and submit it to the lending committee for decision.
- Track loan requests, maintain a conversation tracking log, contact the member with the decision, and follow up to obtain completed loan applications.
- Work closely with loan processors to assist in gathering of additional documentation required by underwriting.
- Provide loan information and service to members, realtors, developers, builders, and others as needed regularly.
- Attend and facilitate loan applications and closings both inside and outside of the branch.
- Develops and maintains a pipeline of new applicants. Meets expectations regularly in regard to monthly loan goals.
- Review market interest rates and loan products to make recommendations for enhancements to the mortgage program.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of two years of similar or related experience in the financial industry.
- Proven success in developing leads and closing sales in residential mortgage lending.
- Self-motivated and well-organized.
- Must have knowledge of various federal regulations and the responsibilities relating to each act of the following:
- Right to Financial Privacy Act
- Regulation C (Home Mortgage Disclosure Act - HMDA)
- Regulation CC (Funds Availability)
- Regulation Z (Truth in Lending)
- Bank Secrecy Act (BSA)
- Experience in Conventional, VA and FHA home loans is preferred.

Job Location: Sterling Heights
Schedule: Standard work schedule will be a 5-day work week Monday - Friday with occasional evenings and Saturdays. This position requires extensive external contacts and local travel. This position will be required to work with limited supervision. Scheduling is subject to change at management's discretion based on the operational needs of the credit union.

The primary purpose of the Mortgage Lending Originator is to assist FreeStar Financial Credit Union in fulfilling our mission by developing outside Real Estate Lending opportunities. Market the Credit Union's mortgage products by networking with Realtors, Builders, Developers, and other community organizations. The position represents the Credit Union in the community and related functions to identify, develop, and promote Mortgage services. May present seminars to the general public and real estate community. Work strategically to develop rapport with Realtors to attract referral business while building a solid pipeline.
