    Job Summary

    Position is open until filled and may close at any time after April 19, 2024.

    This position develops and coordinates a sustainability education plan that includes public outreach to ensure cities, community councils, and residents are fully informed about and the best practices to achieve sustainability for a better community.

    Also provides public communication and education on related services, and current events.

    Serves as the point of contact for the media and social media, and fields inquires and interviews for sustainability and other topics.

    Essential Job Functions

    Acts as the primary point of contact for cities and communities for the District's sustainability education, activities, and reporting.

    Establishes cooperative relationships with community partners, attends community and board meetings, and provides information on recycling and sustainability services. Represents the District and participates in local and national recycling and sustainability organizations. May be asked to serve on the boards of respective agencies/organizations.

    Conducts research to stay apprised of the industry trends and keeps management and executive staff informed. Creates and maintains a variety of records, statistics, reports and correspondence.

    In cooperation with management, monitors all recycling vendor contracts including commodity markets and ensures that vendors are following proper pricing indexes for commodities.

    Takes the lead on WFWRD being represented during sample sorts and vendor's facilities.


    Coordinates with the Quality Assurance Inspectors to ensure responsible recycling from residents and the public by providing the needed notifications to residents when violations occur.

    Evaluates education needs of the community and develops curriculum for multiple learning audiences. Delivers presentations based on said curriculum. Develops and disseminates high-quality education and outreach materials in electronic and print formats. Provides reports for the Board as needed and as requested by the General Manager (GM). Reports directly to the Board upon request by the GM. Develops and provides sustainability education programs and events for schools, community groups, city councils and civic events.

    Effectively manages internet and social media platforms and messaging for sustainability and district services. Responds to inquiries and concerns from the public and news media, and referrals from the front office staff. Curates, collects and distributes sustainability proof points and stories to media channels. Provides researched data and information to support the District's environmental stewardship goals and objectives. This may include participating in cost benefit analysis.

    Coordinates resources for requests from community partners for summer parades and other events. Researches and evaluates trends in recycling and sustainability. Makes recommendations to increase program participation. Supports development of internal culture, commitment, and capability for sustainability.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Minimum Requirements:

    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Studies, Education, Marketing, Communication, Advertising, Government or Public Relations, or other closely related field, plus two (2) years of closely related experience; OR six (6) years of experience that includes a combination of related education and work experience.

    Work performance in the office and field, or community environments, performs occasional moderate to heavy physical activities; bending, sitting, reaching, pushing, pulling and lifting to set up displays, or prepare for parades.


    This position includes responsibilities for fielding the news media and public inquiries as they relate to sustainability, recycling and the District's services.

    This position involves working some evenings, weekends and participation in parades and other community events.
