    Progressive Care Unit RN Job Description

    We are seeking skilled Progressive Care Unit Registered Nurses (RNs) for an immediate travel nurse opening in Birmingham, AL. The ideal candidate will have 1-2 years of recent acute care experience.

    Salary Range: $80,000 - $110,000 per year

    About the Role

    As a PCU Travel Nurse, you will provide high-quality patient care to individuals who require close monitoring and frequent assessment but are not unstable enough to need Intensive Care Unit (ICU) care.

    You will utilize computer equipment to monitor cardiac and other vital information, detecting any changes and enabling intervention in life-threatening or emergency situations.

    Caregivers in this role must closely observe patients as they receive complex medications, sometimes through an intravenous line that may need to be adjusted or titrated.

    The PCU RN is also known as a step-down nurse, and the PCU is referred to as cardiac stepdown, medical stepdown, neuro stepdown, surgical stepdown, and ER holding.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Provide basic bedside care, including stabilizing critical cardiac patients.
    • Change dressings, insert catheters, and start IVs.
    • Prepare, administer, and record prescribed medication, reporting any adverse reactions to treatment.
    • Monitor and adjust specialized equipment used on patients and interpret electronic displays.
    • Initiate corrective action when information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology.

    Requirements

    To be successful in this role, you must possess excellent stress management skills and be able to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds.

    A valid ACLS and BLS certification, as well as 2 years of experience in a similar setting, are required. Additional certifications may be necessary before beginning an assignment.

    Working Conditions: Fast-paced environment; ability to stand and walk for long periods, bend, lean, and stoop without difficulty; lifting up to 50 pounds may be required.
