    The Las Vegas VA is seeking to hire an experienced General Surgeon to join our dynamic team Strong preference for candidates with 5+ years of experience in a busy surgical practice.


    Responsibilities include:

    • S/he of course is charged with delivering the best possible surgical care to our veteran patients. This care must be delivered in accordance with hospital policy and meet community standards. This pertains to outpatients as well as inpatients.
    • VA surgeons are expected to maintain current knowledge and operative skills. They must be able to deliver full service throughout the full spectrum of surgical care; i.e. they are expected to maintain good diagnostic, judgmental, and therapeutic acumen for both floor and operative care of the surgical patient.
    • This involves supervision of surgical residents who serve as the "first responders" for all surgical patients. In the uncommon event of no or inadequate resident availability, the attending surgeon will be the first to see the patient.
    • The attending surgeon has ultimate decision making capacity and ultimate responsibility for the care rendered. Ideally, this control will be exercised in an educationally appropriate way with the entire surgical team of residents, students, mid-level providers, etc.
    • Each general surgeon is expected to function as a cooperative and collegial team member with the entire general surgery division. This means that each individual surgeon should expect to take a proportional amount of call (ideally one in four days or less). S/he should be prepared to cover other attendings' patients when "on call" as well as to be able to delegate responsibility to colleagues when "off call".
    • Teaching is considered a major duty of a VA staff surgeon. This pertains to colleagues, residents, medical and nursing students, nursing and other ancillary staff.
    • It is expected that staff surgeons will attend monthly Surgical Staff meeting, weekly resident education meetings, and participate in the educational activities.

    8, Staff surgeons are expected to serve on peer review and other committees as requested by the Director, Chief of Staff, Chief of Surgery, or President of the Medical Staff.

    Additionally, there may be non-committee peer review or quality assurance duties that are required on an occasional basis.

    • All medical staff are expected to comply with the credentialing, privileging, security and other requirements of the Veterans Administration and VA Medical Center.
    • Computer access privileges must be maintained according to policy and all medical records will be produced via CPRS (Computerized Patient Record System).
