    Purpose Statement


    The job of Athletic Trainer is done for the purpose/s of providing direct athletic training services to students to help ensure the care, treatment and prevention of injuries to student athletes.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    This is work involving professional assistance for the athletics office. There is considerable contact with staff, students, parents, and outside agencies.

    This employee works within established guidelines, exercising strict confidentiality, initiative and independent judgment in performing duties and in keeping informed of procedures and requirements.

    He/she must have knowledge of a large range of medical problems and possess the skills to react to a medical emergency.

    Assessment, evaluation skills and working with other healthcare professionals will be required. This position also requires the employee to be aware of and maintain the confidentiality of information involved.


    Position Expectations:
    Assists the head athletic trainer and the athletic director by:

    a.selecting, recording inventory for and maintaining equipment and supplies;

    b.coordinating on-site athletic health care with team physician, school nurse and athletic office;

    c.maintaining completed and accurate records of all athletic injuries and treatments rendered; and

    d.supervising the athletic training facility.


    Assists students by:
    a.providing awareness, education and prevention strategies to minimize risk of injury;

    b. providing treatments and reconditioning to athletes during the school day or practice time;

    c. selecting and fitting their protective equipment;

    d. providing on-site injury care and appropriate follow-up;

    e. applying protective or injury-preventive devices, such as taping, bandaging or bracing;

    f. assisting in providing information on nutrition, hygiene and chemical awareness; and

    g.notifying parents and recommending appropriate medical care and follow-up options when an athletic injury has occurred.


    • Continues job performance enhancement by participating in professional growth activities to ensure all required certifications and licenses are current.
    • Projects a positive image of the district to students, staff and others, and exhibits a positive employee attitude.
    • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
    Other Functions


    • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Qualifications:

    • College degree in related field.
    • Current certification by the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer.
    • Current AED and CPR certifications.
    • Current State of Illinois Athletic Trainer license - NPI Number Required.
    • Must hold a valid driver's license to drive to different practice and game facilities.
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
    • Ability to move around frequently in the training rooms and other areas of the buildings and on athletic fields.
    • Ability to frequently lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Strength is required to position patients/students as needed.
    • Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment,rehabilitation and return to play decisions per state licensure guidelines.
    • Ability to organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision.
    • Competent with Google, Microsoft, and SportsWare software programs for entering and maintaining data.
    • Exemplary interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively in high stress/pressure situations when talking to staff, parents, outside agencies, and students.
    Skills, Knowledge and Abilities


    SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.

    Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:

    applying pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; adhering to safety practices; administering first aid; and operating medical equipment utilized in school environment.


    KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.

    Specific Knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include providing health services in a school setting; state laws regarding sexually transmitted diseases; health standards and hazards; and stages of child development.

    ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment.

    Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods.

    Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment.

    Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate.

    Specific Ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include maintaining confidentiality; communicating with diverse groups; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; adhering to safety practices; and being attentive to detail.

    Responsibilities include working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions.

    Working Environment


    The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity.

    Generally, the job requires 30% sitting, 10% walking, and 60% standing. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

    Education College Degree in Athletic Training Field

    Certifications/Licenses Current certification by the Board of Certification for the AthleticTrainer.

    Current State of Illinois Athletic Trainer license - NPI Number Required.

    Current certification in CPR/AED

    FLSA Status Exempt
