    ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIESCompletes preliminary and comprehensive periodontal examinations on new dental service patients; review's patient's medical and dental history; examines the teeth and periodontium for evidence of plaque and periodontal disease and charts the findings including plaque index, bleeding scores microscopic microbial morphology, pocket depths, CPITN scores, tooth mobility, crepitus, etc.; inspects the mouth and throat for evidence of diseases such as oral cancer; takes, develops and interprets routine X-Rays to identify tooth structures, calculus, and abnormalities such as cavities, traumatic occlusion, and report these to the dentist along with any other suspicious lesions.

    Prepares dental hygiene treatment plans for patients including assessment of the problem, type of oral hygiene care required, and the sequence of appointments needed to complete treatment.

    Maintains recall system for careful follow-up of patients that need continued care or evaluation. Performs a complete oral prophylaxis on ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients. Administers local anesthesia under the supervision of the dentist. Performs deep sub gingival scaling, root planning, and gingival curettage. Polishes the teeth and applies stannous fluoride for hypersensitivity and caries prevention. Provides sub gingival irrigation with chemotherapeutic agents. Gives home care instructions to patients after curettage. Provides bedside prophylactic treatment using specialized procedures for debilitated non-ambulatory patients. Selects patients and applies sealants on individual patients.

    Assists the dentist by making repairs and adjustments to teeth by smoothing rough edges of restorations, removing overhanging margins of restorations, reducing sharp edges of fractured teeth, and inserting temporary fillings in teeth.

    Performs suture removal, changes dressings, applies topical anesthetics, and provides home care instructions. Takes impressions for construction of mouth guards and bite splints.

    Instructs patients at chair side in oral hygiene, brushing and flossing techniques, and periodontal aids which increase the amount of stimulation to the periodontium.

    Plans and adapts instructions in home care techniques, tailoring them to the oral hygiene needs and oral problems of individual patients.

    Explains to patients the causes of periodontal disease and tooth decay, and the importance of diet as it relates to oral and systemic health.

    Researches current dental literature and regularly attends hospital and dental staff meetings to make improvements in the oral hygiene program.

    Regularly instructs nurses, health educators, social workers, nursing assistants, community health representatives, other medical staff, and school teachers in the proper techniques of oral hygiene to be applied to young patients/students, the bedridden, handicapped, disabled and chronically ill patient.

    Presents lectures and demonstrations in oral health care to various patient and community groups such as diabetics, hemodialysis patients, drug or alcohol dependent patients, and health boards, using slides, denture models, toothbrushes, charts, and other dental education materials.

    Assesses oral health educational materials, aids, instruments, and equipment imperative for departmental improvements and efficient delivery of dental hygiene care.

    Identifies and evaluates community oral health practices, educational tools, and materials and delivers recommendations and actions for effective provision of oral health promotion and disease prevention.

    Completes reports as assigned and requested by the FDIHB Director of Dental Services.

    Ensures the maintenance of reporting and record systems related to patient care and progress notes according to established FDIHB policies.

    Other duties as assigned.

    Completion of a two (2) or four (4) year Degree in Dental Hygiene from an institution that has been approved by the American Dental Hygiene Association/Commission on Dental Accreditation
