    The College of Liberal Arts is looking for an Academic Advisor to join our team

    Undergraduate Education is a dynamic work environment. We work with undergraduate students from orientation through graduation. Our ideal candidate has a passion for the liberal arts and advising. This person will have an inclusive mindset that centers students. Our advisors work holistically with students to identify their strengths, clarify their interests, and explore areas of study while planning for timely degree completion.

    Advisors provide students with a balance of support and challenge, engaging in a professional practice that is highly contextualized, and focuses on the individual learner's preparation, ability, and interests. Our advisors emphasize multicultural responsiveness in all aspects of their work, in line with the broader university and college goals of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

    Primary duties:

    Academic Advising (Level 2: 85% | Level 3: 75% | Level 4: 75%)

  • Maintain a professional advising caseload of approximately 300 CLA students (with a mix of students in all four years of progress, and in a variety of majors/minors)
  • Embrace Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice to support the growth, development and sense of belonging for all students and colleagues
  • Assist a diverse population of students in navigating resources to support their academic and personal well-being
  • Adjust advising approaches to meet students where they are at in their personal development, being mindful of their individual identities and lived experiences
  • Assist students in planning for degree completion which includes working with multiple offices such as academic departments, academic support services, study abroad programs, and career services
  • Facilitate conversations that focus on core career competencies that reflect the essence of our liberal arts education
  • Support students with planning for health, professional, and graduate programs
  • Work with students as personal or academic challenges arise to maximize student retention and timely degree completion
  • Develop empathic relationships with students using interculturally-informed practices to provide support and challenge when appropriate
  • Use technology to track degree progress, proactively communicate with students and colleagues, and monitor caseload to support degree progress
  • Uphold college and university academic policy and procedures while knowing how to coach students through petition exceptions when warranted
  • Promote student confidence in major and degree programs by articulating the value of a liberal arts education
  • Navigate emergent student situations to help students understand their options and work toward a resolution
  • Participation in Programs and Initiatives (Level 2: 5% | Level 3: 15% | Level 4: 10%)

  • Participate in both remote and on-campus summer and winter orientation sessions for incoming students
  • Participate on various committees to advance college and university initiatives and goals
  • Other initiatives or assignments as need arises
  • Service and Engagement in the field of Academic Advising (Level 2: 10% | Level 3: 10% | Level 4: 15%)

  • Participate in workshops, trainings, and conversations to support competency building in diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice for self and others
  • Recommend and advocate for changes to improve student service
  • Engage in professional development related to advising theory and practice
  • Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

  • Level 2: BA/BS degree plus at least two years of relevant advising work experience, or master's degree.
  • Level 3 (Academic Advisor): BA/BS degree plus at least four years of advising or higher education experience, or master's degree plus at least two years of relevant experience.
  • Level 4 (Senior Advisor): BA/BS degree plus at least five years of relevant academic advising work experience, or master's degree plus at least three years of academic advising work experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a liberal arts discipline, or in higher education, student affairs, college student personnel psychology, counseling, social work, or other field related to advising.
  • One year of advising or teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated evidence of a commitment to promoting a culture that respects and advances diversity and inclusion.
  • Capacity to articulate the nature and advantages of a liberal arts education.
  • Excellent skills in communication (written and oral), multicultural awareness, mastering and disseminating complex information, computer literacy, and time management.
  • Senior Academic Advisor Required Qualifications (to be considered for a Senior Academic Advisor (9704AA) position, individuals must meet the Required Qualifications as stated above AND the following qualifications below):

  • At least three years of college-level advising experience.
  • A thorough and nuanced understanding of curricular options, requirements, and engagement opportunities.
  • Depth of knowledge in evaluating situations, and developing and implementing plans to meet the needs of individuals and groups of students.
  • Demonstrated expertise in working effectively with students with diverse needs and backgrounds by adapting advising strategies within appropriate cultural contexts.
  • Experience with mentoring, advising colleagues in specific advising tasks, policies and systems, case consultations, and the development of nuanced decision-making skills.
  • Experience with creating and delivering training for staff and faculty on advising topics such as exploring student national trends and research, and the academic and career decision-making process.
  • Experience creating change to impact student success.

    *We are currently hiring advisors in any of the three levels (9702AA, 9703AA, 9704AA) depending on your qualifications.

    Salary Ranges:

    Level 2: $47,725-$48,750

    Level 3: $51,875-$57,000

    Level 4: $61,200
