    Cyber Security Research and Development Engineer - State College, United States - Applied Research Laboratory at the Penn State University

    Description

    We are looking for a highly motivated Cyber Security Engineer to join our dynamic and fast-paced Vehicle Investigation and Cybersecurity (VIC) Department of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University (PSU). You will be working at the forefront of technical innovation with some of the best in the industry and ensuring our software/hardware engineering teams are developing the latest security upgrades to industrial controls and military ground vehicle assets.

    ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

    You will:

    • Assist in implementation and monitor security measures for the protection of computer systems, networks, and information
    • Conduct regular security assessments and audits to identify vulnerabilities within the system and propose enhancements
    • Collaborate with the engineering team to ensure the security standards are being applied to new designs of industrial controls systems and ground vehicle systems
    • Setup hardware testbeds to assess for security vulnerabilities
    • Analyze and respond to security incidents, including providing post-event analyses and recommendations for preventing future incidents
    • Develop and maintain documentation related to cyber security policies, procedures, and incident reports
    • Stay up-to-date with the latest cyber security trends, techniques, and tools to combat threats
    • Assist in the development and delivery of cyber security training to staff to raise awareness and competence in identifying and mitigating threats.

    Minimally requires a Bachelors' degree in an engineering or science discipline.

    Required skills/experience areas include:

    • Cyber Security Analytics or Operations, Information Technology
    • Demonstrated experience with PLCs and HMI programming, computer systems, and networking
    • Ground vehicle testing and CAN data bus
    • 3D modeling in Solidworks or AutoCAD
    • Knowledge of Wireshark to parse and analysis network traffic
    • Understanding of cyber security principles, techniques, and protocols (e.g., firewalls, VPN, IDS/IPS, and encryption)
    • Familiarity with operating systems, including Windows, Linux, and Unix, as well as scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash)
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex security issues to non-technical stakeholders

    Preferred Skills/experience areas include:

    • Programming microprocessors/microcontrollers
    • Certifications such as CompTIA Security+, CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker), or equivalent
