    Fleet Manager/Shop Manager:

    Ideal Background for Fleet Manager:

    1: Successive experience in Heavy Equipment Maintenance, worked their way into a leadership role, and is currently in a manager role.

    2. Someone who started as a service advisor, and moved into a shop manager role. Essentially, it isn't completely hands on, but need someone who can stick their head under the hood and diagnose problems & Lead the team to successful maintenance and repairs.

    • Supervision of Operations for Fleet Manager:

    Core responsibility to oversee daily operations of the Company - Heavy Equipment and Truck Maintenance Department.

    Receives work requests submitted by Company Managers for needing repair or periodic maintenance. Prioritizes repair work in conjunction with the Company Managers needs including trucks, trailers, construction equipment, company vehicles (cars and passenger trucks) and other assets;

    Diagnosis of all repairs or maintenance work to be completed, parts needed and estimation of down time for the asset(s) being evaluated;

    Following diagnosis, assignment of appropriate mechanics or staff and procurement of parts and materials to complete the work in line with operational requirements and time estimates. Also managing shifts in work priorities and making necessary staff reassignments as needed throughout the day;

    After repairs, undertake all review of performed work for quality control reasons prior to putting the asset(s) back into service. Ensuring, to the extent possible that work is completed in line with assigned schedules and equipment downtime estimates;

    Coordination on a job-by-job basis with the parts clerk to ensure that parts on hand are used when possible and that needed parts for each job are ordered.- Manages parts and supplies procurement with the effective use of the existing Fleet Manager Software Program to ensure that existing inventory is used first when possible;

    Monitoring expenditures for parts to ensure that 3 bids are obtained, where possible and appropriate, and we are selecting lowest responsible pricing for parts;

    Critically evaluating workload on a daily basis; typically, most repairs and periodic maintenance will be performed in-house by staff. When repair and or periodic maintenance work is backlogged, or when complicated extensive repairs are required the Corporate Equipment Manager will make use of external resources from equipment dealer service departments such as Foley Caterpillar, Jesco - John Deere, Komatsu, Extec, etc. Outsourced repairs must be approved by the Chief Operating Officer or designee;

    Maintaining all maintenance schedules in the Fleet Manager Software Program for each piece of equipment and ensuring maintenance work is completed on a timely basis;

    Ensuring that equipment under warranty is repaired by the manufacturer or under other direction provided within the warranty.

    Ensures assigned staff utilizes proper containment measures when equipment leaks are found and ensures the proper cleanup of any spills.


    • Health & Safety: Cooperation with the Director of Health & Safety in the administration of health & safety practices and procedures for all Shop Supervisors and staff. Core duties include the following:

    Maintaining thorough knowledge and familiarity with the "Health & Safety Manual" and, in particular, those portions dedicated to Equipment Maintenance operations;

    Maintaining basic knowledge of applicable OSHA requirements which impact Equipment Maintenance operations;

    Cooperating and supporting the Director of Health & Safety in weekly training sessions for all staff such as the "Tailgate/Toolbox Safety Training" modules;

    Help solidify a Corporate attitude and mentality of"safety first" which transcends legal requirements provided in applicable law and OSHA standards for worker safety and protection, to ingrain in managers and staff the importance of health and safety in our daily work.


    • Fleet Manager-Supervision of Direct Report Staff: Direct oversight of all Equipment Maintenance staff. Core functions include:Developing operational protocols for business practices (equipment repairs and maintenance) conducted by each direct report and for their operational area;- Preparation and updates of Job Descriptions for all direct report employees on forms supplied by the Company;

    Conducting "Performance Assessments" for direct report staff with Interim Ratings completed by mid-year and Final Ratings by end of year on forms provided by the Company;

    Monitoring all time balances for each employee, including work hours, time clock punching in and out, sick time and vacation time;

    Developing cross training of staff, where possible, to ensure backup staffing for continuity of operations in maintenance and repairs;

    Ensure proper staffing on Saturdays' and during extended hours of operation.

    Provides recommendations to the Human Resources Department for staffing needs and participates in candidate interviews on an as needed basis.


    • Physical Abilities' Requirements: In conjunction with this position, the Fleet Manager/Shop Manager must be able to perform certain physical tasks, including but not limited to the following:- Frequent walking and standing;- Lifting up to 50 pounds;- Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, squatting and twisting;- Must be able to see with or without corrective eye wear; and- Must be able to hear clearly with or without assistance.
