    A Patient Sitter Role

    The Patient Sitter supports the patient care team by addressing specific patient needs.

    Key Responsibilities:

    1. Direct Observation: The Patient Sitter provides continuous observation of the assigned patient to ensure safety and prevent injury at all times.
    2. Patient Care Support: The Patient Sitter works under direct supervision from a Registered Nurse (RN) to provide a safe environment for the patient.
    3. Performance Standards:
      1. Provides direct and continuous observation of patient, maintaining visual contact at all times.
      2. Must be within arm's length/reach at all times.
      3. Supports the patient care team, ensuring patient safety, observing and reporting changes in patient behavior to the RN.
      4. Care within job duties and responsibilities.
      5. No leaving the patient unless relieved by another staff member.
      6. Notifies RN if tubes, IV, catheter, etc. become disconnected.
      7. Reports equipment alarms in the patient room to the PCT or RN as applicable.

    Additionally, the Patient Sitter transitions with the patient throughout their hospital stay, maintains a clean environment, promotes infection prevention, and competently utilizes technology.

    The Patient Sitter will summon the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance or other nursing intervention outside of their job description.
