    The salary range for this position, including the Dayton, OH locality, is DR-02 $89,019 - $139,781 or DR-03 $122,860 - $173,623.The AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate seeks to hire a motivated and experienced mid-level Scientist or Engineer to serve as an Additive Manufacturing Engineer or Scientist in the Structural Systems Manufacturing Branch of the Manufacturing & Industrial Technologies Division.

    This position will be filled at the DR-02 (GS-12/13 equivalent) or DR-03 (GS-14 equivalent) level and is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH.

    This position may be filled as a 5-year Flexible Length Renewable Technical Term Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later extend or convert to a permanent appointment.

    Serves in the Structural Systems Manufacturing Branch within the Manufacturing and Industrial Technologies Division.

    Position duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Perform multidisciplinary professional scientific or engineering work focused on additive manufacturing for metals, polymers, ceramics and/or composites, particularly their quality and quality assurance systems, certification, and standards.
    • Apply a strong knowledge base in material science, testing, and manufacturing processes to develop and optimize methods for additive manufacturing of aerospace components, devices, and systems.
    • Plan and execute a diverse portfolio of projects aimed at establishing, enhancing, and preserving critical manufacturing capabilities relevant to national defense.
    • Apply technical expertise and advanced scientific or engineering principles to ensure that projects and processes align with program objectives, meet performance criteria, and adhere to established policies, schedules, and costs.
    • Collaborate within and across departments, as well as with external stakeholders such as the Department of Defense, to understand customer requirements and modernization priorities, ensuring alignment with our strategic objectives.
    • Serve in Service and/or Interagency teams to advance programs and build partnerships.
    • Continue to strengthen technical knowledge to assist with identifying and solving the Department's most critical barriers to enable advancements in Department of Air Force systems.
    • Construct and elaborate on a programmatic vision for additive manufacturing relevant for DAF needs.

    Required Qualifications

    • US Citizenship
    • Possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree, in a relevant technical field, from an accredited (or ABET accredited for engineering) academic institution.
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance (for new hires); Possess and maintain a Secret security clearance (for current employees).
    • For DR-02, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at the DR-01, GS-11 or equivalent grade level.

    Examples of specialized experience include:

    applying engineering principles to the design and/or manufacturing processes of additive manufacturing materials and additively manufactured parts/components, particularly their qualification and certification; providing technical oversight, management, and support throughout the additive manufacturing process; developing and managing research and development initiatives focused on advancing additive manufacturing for defense applications.-OR- For DR-03, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at the DR-02, GS-13 or equivalent grade level.


    Examples of specialized experience include:

    serving on or leading collaborative panels or teams that provide engineering expertise or oversight in the field of additive manufacturing; designing manufacturing processes to meet qualification and/or certification requirements; managing or leading others in the development of initiatives focused on advancing additive manufacturing for defense applications.

    Desired Qualifications

    • Advanced degree in a related technical area.
    • Experience in additive manufacturing processes including metals, polymers, ceramics and/or composites.
    • Understanding of manufacturing processes, including experience in associated quality and quality assurance systems, certification, and standards.
    • Three or more years' experience managing government contracts.
    • Three or more years' experience building and executing technical and/or manufacturing roadmaps.
    • NDE/NDT certification or material qualification certifications.
    • Strong organization, verbal, and written communication skills.
