    Systems Design and Characterization Engineer (Assistant Project Scientist and Associate Project Scientist)


    Salary range:
    Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled,

    REPRESENTED PROJECT ___ (E.G., SCIENTIST) SERIES FISCAL YEAR .

    "Off-scale salaries", i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

    A reasonable estimate for this position is $71,500 - $95,600.

    Full-time (100%)


    Anticipated start:
    As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.


    Position duration:
    Initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

    Position description
    The Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics (SCIPP) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a


    Systems Design and Characterization Engineer , with duties similar to that of an early-career device engineer or systems engineer in the private sector.

    The Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics (SCIPP) is an organized research unit within the University of California system. SCIPP's scientific and technical staff have been involved in several cutting-edge research projects for more than 25 years.

    The primary focus is experimental and theoretical particle physics and particle astrophysics, including the development of technologies needed to advance that research.


    Under the direction of Professor Bruce Schumm, the engineer will design electronic and data acquisition components for advanced semiconductor detection systems.

    The engineer will also lead the design of detectors through the development of TCAD-based simulation models.


    The engineer will direct the design, evaluation and readout of multi-layer hybrid electronic assemblies for detector modules for High-Energy Physics experiments and related applications.


    The candidate is expected to interact with a broad group of collaborators; assist with the dissemination of the research through co-authored publications in scientific journals and presenting at relevant workshops and conferences; and assist with applications for grant and contract proposals.

    Qualifications

    Basic qualifications

    (required at time of application)

    Ph.
    D. (or an equivalent foreign degree) in engineering, physical science, or a related field.

    A minimum of three (3) years of postdoctoral scholar research, or equivalent experience, in one or more of the following areas:

    component-level data acquisition

    detector systems design and/or characterization

    control system design

    TCAD device simulation
