    Job Summary

    The Matanuska-Susitna Borough is recruiting for either a Mechanic I or Mechanic II, depending on individual qualifications.

    This position is responsible for the mechanical repair and maintenance of department vehicles and equipment.


    Work is performed and duties are carried out in accordance with established Borough core values: Accountability, Customer Focus, Dedication, Integrity, Responsiveness and Teamwork.

    Minimum Requirements

    Mechanic I

    High School diploma or equivalent.

    Three (3) years of experience in the occupational field, sufficient to understand the major duties of the position.


    Possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License, issued by the State of Alaska required for the position being hired, and possession of a valid Department of Transportation medical card.

    ASE Technician certification preferred.

    Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and post-offer employment physical.

    Completion of required Incident Command System (ICS) courses in accordance with established Borough policy.

    To be considered for Mechanic II the applicant must meet the following minimum requirements:

    High School diploma or equivalent.

    Five (5) years of experience in the occupational field, sufficient to understand the major duties of the position.

    ASE Technician certification required.

    Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification preferred for positions within Emergency Services.


    Possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License, issued by the State of Alaska required for the position being hired, and possession of a valid Department of Transportation medical card.


    Current HAZWOPER certification or ability to become HAZWOPER certified within 6 months of the hire date for positions within Solid Waste.

    Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and post-offer employment physical.

    This position is subject to federal drug and alcohol testing provisions.

    Completion of required Incident Command System (ICS) courses in accordance with established Borough policy.

    Duties/Responsibilities


    • Performs routine and preventative maintenance on department vehicles, equipment and apparatus.
    • Evaluates mechanical problems using diagnostic equipment.
    • Diagnoses mechanical, electrical, engine, fuel system, cooling system, HVAC, brake and suspension problems and makes repairs.
    • Rebuilds, replaces or repairs major vehicle components.
    • Performs welding to repair body components.
    • Installs new equipment.
    • Estimates time and materials needed to complete repairs.
    • Researches illustrated parts breakdowns to identify required parts.
    • Maintains daily maintenance logs.
    • Makes arrangements with vendors and contract service provider for major repairs and overhauls.
    • Test drives vehicles and equipment to ensure operational status.
    • Maintains current and up-to-date records of all maintenance performed.
    • Orders parts and supplies from approved vendors.
    • Coordinates, oversees, and directs contractors and vendors in major repairs, including inspections of equipment to verify compliance with safety specifications.
    • Monitors, tracks, and prepares status reports of emergency and/or fleet vehicles.
    • Reviews billing from vendors and makes determinations for the procurement and disposal of vehicles, equipment, and apparatus.
    • Responds to emergency calls for service; makes field repairs.
    • Assists with snow removal operations
    • Performs related duties.
