    GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

    The Operating Room Surgical Technologist must know and apply sterile technique, perform the duties of the scrub tech before, during and after surgery and have an understanding of equipment usage.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Sets up sterile field within the center's established policies.
    • Opens, passes, and receives items in the sterile field correctly.
    • Scrubs, gowns and gloves for cases according to AORN standards and the policies of OrthoArkansas' Surgery Centers.
    • Exhibits and demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the principle of sterile technique.
    • Assist the RN Circulator in the OR to facilitate turnover of the room in between cases.
    • Wears proper attire for being exposed to patient's body fluids.
    • Recognizes breaks in sterile technique and calls attention to it.
    • Operates sterilization equipment safely and accurately. Complies with all Federal and State regulations.
    • Utilizes MSDS manual information and Hazardous Communication Plan.
    • Demonstrates correct care, set up, use and cleaning, handling of instrument trays.
    • Plans, implements, and practices effective cost reduction techniques to reduce waste.
    • Restocks ORs and identifies supplies that need to be reordered.
    • Assist in gathering data for PI Studies, as assigned.
    • Practices the correct disposal of sharps according to the guidelines of State and OSHA.
    • Applies knowledge of age base competencies in interacting with patients.
    • Enter statistical data into computer for maintenance required Surgical Log.
    • Receive packages and answer back door for delivery services.
    • Interacts with surgeons on pricing of new instruments and patient care.
    • Provides coverage in Sterile Processing, as assigned.
    • Communicates and collaborates effectively with all physicians and staff members to ensure patient safety.
    • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
    High school diploma or GED. Successfully completed an accredited surgical technician program, 12 to 18 months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to question in person-to-person and small group situations. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to calculate figures and amounts as well as apply concepts such as fractions, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to problem solve.
