    Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking applicants for an archaeologist (Environmental Professional 2) to support the Cultural Resources Program as a part of the National Historical Preservation Act, which is part of the Laboratory's diverse Environmental Protection and Compliance Division. The Cultural Resources program manages 2,000 archaeological sites spanning 10,000 years of human activity on the Pajarito Plateau, across approximately 40 square miles of Laboratory property. This unique landscape is characterized by deep canyons and mesas and is directly adjacent to Bandelier National Monument. The archaeologist will join a team of cultural resources specialists who support the Laboratory's mission by ensuring compliance with federal and state cultural resources laws and regulations including Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The position requires the ability to work cooperatively with team members and to provide excellent customer service while helping projects avoid impacts to cultural resources. The archaeologist will conduct archaeological surveys, site recording, and monitoring, as well as review projects to assess potential impacts to cultural resources. The archaeologist will also participate in writing reports and other documents as needed.

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    • Experience conducting archeological fieldwork such as survey, site recording, and excavation, and preparing cultural resources reports, historic preservation documentation, or other documents written for professional or public use.
    • Familiarity and experience with the archaeology of northern New Mexico.
    • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal communication skills, teamwork, and customer service.
    • Demonstrated excellence in writing skills.
    • Advanced experience identifying archaeological materials such as ceramics, lithics, or faunal remains.

    Education/Experience:

    • Bachelor's degree and 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Experience with cultural resources management work, laws, and regulations.
    • Experience and/or interest in database management and development.
    • Knowledge of statistical techniques, scientific methods, and/or data analysis.
    • Knowledge or experience working with indigenous peoples, especially in relation to cultural resource management issues.
    • Graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a related field.
    • Knowledge of MS Office.
    • Demonstrated clear communication skills.
    • Experience in Northern New Mexico.
    • Experience with Southwest Archeology work.

    Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen.
