    The Amazon Search team owns the software that powers Search - a critical customer-focused feature of Whenever you visit an Amazon site anywhere in the world, it's our technology that delivers you outstanding search results. Our services are used by millions of Amazon customers every day.

    The Search Engine Infrastructure team is responsible for the large-scale distributed systems that power those results. We design, build and operate high performance fault tolerant services that apply the latest technologies to solve customer problems. As part of this vision, we are building the infrastructure to enable next generation Deep-learning-based relevance ranking. We focus on high availability, frugally serving billions of requests per day with low latency. We work alongside applied scientists and ML engineers to make this happen.

    Key job responsibilities

    In this role, you will:

    1. Be responsible for the overall systems development life cycle of a key subsystems of our search engine.
    2. Engage with other teams across Amazon to evangelize the team and your projects, to build relationships and help identify existing technologies that can be leveraged to meet your team's goals.
    3. Manage and execute against project plans and delivery commitments, manage the day-to-day activities of the engineering team.
    4. Ensure that design and architecture decisions by your team meet goals and vision of the search service
    5. Manage departmental resources, staffing, mentoring, and enhancing and maintaining a best-of-class engineering team
    6. Work closely with the engineers to architect and develop the best technical design and approach
    7. Report on status of development, quality, operations, and system performance to management
    8. Responsible for both development and operations of product(s)
    9. Determine development priorities in collaboration with the Sciences org.
    10. Create long-term vision and growth plans, collaborating with other leaders in the Science and Engineering orgs

    Basic Qualifications

    • 10+ years of engineering experience
    • 5+ years of engineering team management experience
    • 10+ years of planning, designing, developing and delivering consumer software experience
    • Experience partnering with product or program management teams
    • Experience managing multiple concurrent programs, projects and development teams in an Agile environment

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience partnering with product and program management teams
    • Experience designing and developing large scale, high-traffic applications
      1. Masters Degree or PhD in Computer Science, or related discipline.
      1. 10+ years of people management experience
      1. Deep familiarity with the ML/DL space and technologies.
      1. Experience owning large-scale low-latency distributed systems that handle large amounts of data, especially ones that deal with ML algorithms.
      1. Experience performance testing of online systems.
      1. Polished written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate across Science and Engineering orgs with confidence, clarity, and focus.

    Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $176,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $342,300/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
