    Position Summary


    The Co-Response Clinician is designed to assess the needs of individuals who are experiencing a mental health crisis working with the community crisis response program will use information obtained to develop and implement appropriate collaborative treatment approaches, and support services to avert an emergency custody order, temporary detention order, inpatient psychiatric hospitalization, and/or involvement in the criminal justice system toward needed treatment and support.

    Interventions will be provided as part of a co-responder crisis intervention team with the City of Lynchburg or Bedford and Campbell County police during evening and weekend hours.

    Office/community-based position (no telework).

    Required Education and Experience


    60 hour Master's degree from an accredited college/university in an applicable human services field and registered with the Virginia Board of Counseling for clinical supervision working toward licensure.

    One year experience working with identified population served. Eligible to register as an LMHPE with the VA Board of Counseling within three months of hire. Preferred candidate has one to two years of prior crisis response related experience in the field of Mental Health. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

    Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


    Will accompany LPD sworn officer during peak mental health crisis hours, to be dispatched on-scene to assess crisis; Follow directives and instructions from the accompanying LPD officer in order to ensure and maintain a safe environment; Ability to work with a wide variety of client populations (including youth and adults) in a community setting; Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with community-based external stakeholders; Communicate effectively verbally and written.

    Present a positive and friendly demeanor to clients, their families, staff, and clinic support personnel, funders and the public.; Knowledge in DSM-IV/DSM-V diagnoses.

    Knowledge of the appropriate and effective use of HIPAA; Ability to promote positive, collaborative, and professional working relations among co-workers and representatives in the community; Knowledge of community mental health and public health in order to provide advocacy and enhance an individual's treatment and access to community resources; Knowledge of psychiatric/medical medications/treatments; Ability to participate in and successfully pass behavioral intervention training; includes both verbal de-escalation skills and physical skills techniques to be utilized with consumers as needed; willing and available to work modified schedules (weekends, holiday, etc.) as required; Ability to drive and must possess a valid driver's license.

    Regular attendance at training and Horizon meetings may require travel to a variety of Horizon sites.
