    Description

    This position mainly details working closely with male students of color at the university level and potentially mentoring male students of color in grades 10-12 at select high schools in the Ogden, Weber, and Davis school districts.

    The primary focus of the MOCCA Advocate is to empower and mentor underrepresented, first-generation, low-income male students of color, including those who identify as African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian-American/Pacific Islander, American Indian, or multiracial.

    This involves targeting high schools in the Weber, Davis, and Ogden districts to encourage enrollment in post-secondary institutions.


    Duties:
    Essential Duties- Duties may include but are not limited to, the following:

    The MOCCA Advocates are crucial for recruiting and retaining male students of color within the

    Men of Color College Advancement Program and EDI Department. The MOCCA Advocates will be

    responsible for supporting the success of recruitment and retention programs and may be asked


    to help with:

    • Meet one-on-one with at-risk students during regular school hours weekly or monthly.
    • Tabling at other locations for recruitment.
    • Offering assistance and a listening ear to MOC through broad support and targeted outreach.
    • Developing, assisting, moderating, and leading participation in bi-weekly meetings and
    * monthly programs related to the following topics: o Aiding MOC in navigating campus resources (financial aid, registration, wellness, tutoring, food bank, counseling, disability services, etc.)

    o Developing a connection to campus and community (transition to college, making meaningful connections, participating in clubs and programs as well as community programs, etc.)

    o Preparing for graduation and beyond (resumes, leadership skills, communication skills, working with diverse populations, etc.)

    o Staffing the MOCCA Office to answer phones and office questions.


    • Visit select secondary schools to assist with college access and outreach efforts.
    o Provide college access resources (assistance with college choices, admissions, scholarship application assistance, college advice, answer FAFSA questions, registration).

    To facilitate opportunities for the men of color (MOC) to achieve the outcomes related to the areas mentioned above, the MOCCA Advocates will adhere to the following expectations:


    • Attend Men of Color Club meetings on a regular basis to build and sustain personal
    * connections with the brotherhood and its leaders.

    • Assist and offer support with campus resources to create a smooth transition to college,
    • Assist MOC in the club and on campus with acclimation to campus, address barriers to success and establish a sense of belonging.
    MOCCA Advocates are viewed as peer mentors, coaches, role models, advisors, guides, and referral agents, and big brothers.

    MOCCA Advocates must be able to:

    • Create and understand personal and professional boundaries.
    • Establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with mentees focused on helping new students make a smooth transition, acclimate to campus, and establish a sense of belonging.
    • Assist with social media outreach to increase participation and promote involvement.
    • Motivated to plan, participate, and attend events focused on enhancing diversity and inclusion at the university.
    • Meet regularly with the MOCCA supervisors to set goals and review progress.
    • Set and maintain personal and professional goals.
    This is a pooled position. Applicants are selected from the pool as positions

    Required Qualifications


    Minimum Requirements:

    • 2.5 GPA or higher
    • Full-time (12 credits or more)
    • Must demonstrate an ability or desire to work effectively with historically underrepresented students (Moreso males of color).
    • Autonomous and proactive
    • Must be Proficient in using Gmail and Calendar
    • Critical thinking skills
    • Adaptability
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Team-oriented
    • Experience working with Microsoft suite/software.
    • Event Planning
    • Good communication skills (presenting/communicating information, actively listening, mediating, conflict management)

    Mature and able to establish appropriate student boundaries

    Applicants must be able to work up to 10-15 hours a week and have reliable transportation.

    Preferred Qualifications


    Preferred Qualifications:

    • 3.0 GPA to qualify for CPE/ CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) certification.
    • Work study is preferred. Completed FAFSA.
    • Experience working with diverse populations.
    • Experience mentoring and/or motivating others.
    • Experience coordinating programs and people participation.
    • Teamwork/Team-oriented
    • Experience working with college students.
    • Experience or knowledge of challenges facing first-generation, historically underrepresented males of color.
    • Responsible, committed, autonomous and proactive, self-motivated, enthusiastic, have excellent leadership skills, be a team player, and have a strong desire to work with underrepresented populations.
